Fantasy Football Consistency: Why Floor Matters More Than Ceiling in Redraft
When choosing between two players with the same season-long projection, the consistent one is almost always the better start. A WR who scores 12–18 points every week is more valuable in most formats than one who scores 25 points twice and 4 points the other five weeks — even if the season total is identical.

What Consistency Means
Consistency is how tightly a player’s weekly output clusters around his average. A consistent player reliably hits a predictable range. An inconsistent player has high variance — huge weeks and terrible weeks.
Example:
- Player A: 14, 16, 13, 15, 12, 18, 14 → Average: 14.6 PPR points per game. Consistent.
- Player B: 29, 5, 4, 28, 7, 6, 26 → Average: 15 PPR points per game. Inconsistent.
Player B has a higher season average, but three of his seven games he scored 4–7 points. Player A gives you a predictable 12–18 every week. In a head-to-head league where any of those bad weeks could cost you a matchup in a tight standings race, Player A is the more valuable starter despite the lower average.
What Drives Player Consistency
Target share consistency: WRs and TEs who command consistent weekly target volume are more consistent than those who get targets sporadically. A WR who gets 8–10 targets per game will produce most weeks even without touchdowns. A WR who averages 6 targets but gets 2 some weeks and 12 others is fundamentally volatile. High target share + high route run rate (80%+) = high floor.
Role consistency: Players with defined roles in the offense are more consistent. A WR who lines up as the clear number one option on every drive has a consistent function. A gadget player used only in certain formations or game states will be volatile.
Game script independence: Players who produce regardless of whether their team is winning or losing are more consistent. A WR whose volume only increases when his team is trailing is game-script dependent — volatile based on how the game flows.
Red zone share: Players with consistent red zone involvement score touchdowns more regularly. Touchdowns are the biggest single-week spike, so players who find the end zone consistently have higher floors than those who rarely get red zone targets despite good volume.
Measuring Consistency
Standard deviation of weekly scores: The cleanest consistency measurement. A low standard deviation means scores cluster tightly. Most fantasy analytics sites calculate this automatically. When comparing two players with similar averages, the one with lower weekly score variance is the more reliable start.
Floor rate: What percentage of weeks does a player hit a minimum viable score? For a WR2 starter in PPR, the floor might be 10 points. 80%+ floor rate = highly consistent. 50% floor rate = volatile.
Consistency by Format
Standard scoring: Touchdowns drive scoring, making consistency harder for receivers who do not get red zone volume. Volume RBs are inherently more consistent because carries produce yards regardless of touchdown luck.
PPR: Receptions floor out weekly scores. A WR who catches 6 passes for 45 yards is already at 10.5 PPR points with no TD. High reception volume creates consistency. PPR naturally rewards the same players who are consistent — slot WRs and pass-catching RBs.
Half-PPR: The middle ground. Reception floor is present but smaller. Target share still drives consistency.
Building a Consistent Lineup
The ideal lineup has a mix:
- High-floor starters who reliably produce 12–18 points across your starting core
- One ceiling play at a position where you have depth — upside without full dependence on a volatile player
Stacking your lineup with boom-bust players is structurally fragile. You need big weeks from several players simultaneously to beat a team with 3–4 consistent producers. Most weeks, the consistent team wins.
