A great draft doesn’t guarantee a title, but it gives you a roster that can compete even when your in-season luck runs cold; a poor one means you spend the whole year digging out of a hole. Drafting well isn’t luck — it’s preparation (knowing the player pool and having a plan) plus discipline (sticking to value instead of reaching for names). Before the Draft: Preparation

What to lock in before you’re on the clock:

  1. Know your league’s settings cold. Scoring format (PPR, half-PPR, standard), roster configuration, and starting requirements all change which players are valuable — a strategy built for the wrong format drafts the wrong players.

  • Draft tiers, not names — when several players sit in one tier, take the one who fills a need or offers the best value, and use the tier breaks to decide when you must grab a position before it falls off.
  • Don’t reach — taking a player rounds before his ADP wastes value you could’ve captured later.
  • Let the draft come to you — when a player you valued highly falls past his ADP, that’s the draft handing you value. Pounce.
  • Avoid the common draft-day mistakes — drafting your favorite team’s players, ignoring byes, chasing last year’s points, panicking into a run.

Worked Example: The Run You Don’t Chase

It’s the middle rounds and the room goes on a running-back run — back after back flying off the board.

  • The reacher: Feels the scarcity, panics, and grabs an RB a full round before his ADP “to keep up.” He paid above value into the run and weakened the positions he could’ve dominated.
  • The disciplined drafter: Recognizes the run as a chance — lets the room overpay for RBs while he scoops the elite receiver who just slid past his ADP because everyone else was chasing backs. He took the value the run created.

Position-by-Position Priorities

Adjust to your scoring format, but the general shape holds:

  • Anchor early rounds with elite, high-floor producers at the positions your format values most.
  • Balance the roster so you’re not thin at any starting spot.
  • Target upside on the bench — the late rounds are where a single breakout can win your league.
  • Don’t overdraft shallow positions when deeper ones still offer value.
