When Efficiency Matters
Red zone efficiency. Touchdowns are the most efficient fantasy scoring event. A player who converts red zone targets into touchdowns at a high rate can offset below-average total volume with elite scoring — for as long as the touchdown rate is sustainable. Red zone TD rates regress toward the mean over time.
Yards after catch efficiency. A WR with elite yards after catch creates more fantasy points from the same targets than a route-runner who catches passes short of the sticks. YAC efficiency adds an efficiency multiplier to targets.
Practical Application
Prefer volume over efficiency when in doubt. In fantasy drafts, a player with high consistent volume is more reliably valuable than a high-efficiency low-volume player. Volume is more predictable than efficiency spikes — and high-volume players maintain floor even in off weeks.
Flag unsustainable efficiency. A RB averaging 8.0 yards per carry through 6 weeks will regress. Draft or trade for him based on his volume opportunity, not the efficiency spike — the yards per carry will normalize.
