Fantasy Football Expected Value: How to Make Better Fantasy Decisions Using Expected Value

The practical EV insight for fantasy: most managers make decisions based on the most likely single outcome. EV thinking accounts for the full distribution. A player with a 30% chance of scoring 35 points and a 70% chance of scoring 8 points has an EV of 16.1 points. A player with a 90% chance of scoring 14 points and a 10% chance of scoring 6 has an EV of 13.2 points. The first player has higher EV even though his most likely outcome is lower.

EV in Trade Decisions

Evaluate trades on EV, not single scenarios. When evaluating a trade, do not just consider the single most likely outcome for each player — consider the probability distribution. If one player has high upside but a significant injury risk, his EV may be lower than a more consistent player even if his ceiling is higher.

Roster context affects EV. A player’s EV depends on your roster situation. If you are in a must-win game and need a big performance, the high-variance player has higher lineup EV even if his season-long EV is lower — you need the ceiling.


EV in Draft Decisions

Target players where your EV estimate exceeds the market ADP. If you believe a player will average 18 PPG but his ADP projects only 14 PPG, his draft value is higher than what the market is pricing. Take him when his EV justifies the pick.
