On talent and season-long touches he still looks like a lock — but read the projected game script. His team is likely to fall behind early, and trailing teams abandon the run to pass and catch up. That means his carries could crater 40–60% versus a neutral script, no matter how good he is; the offense simply won’t be handing off while chasing points. His realistic ceiling this week is capped by the deficit.
So the manager adjusts: if he has a comparable RB whose team is favored (and thus projected for a lead and clock-killing carries), that back is the better start this week. Meanwhile the same spread flips the read for pass-catchers — a WR on that big-underdog team gets elevated target volume as the team throws to come back, and is a sneaky-good start even though the team total is low. The manager who checks the spread before setting his lineup rides positive scripts for RBs and negative scripts for WRs; the one who starts on names alone eats a 6-carry dud and benches the underdog WR who just saw 12 targets in a comeback.
