How platforms generate projections: most major fantasy platforms (Yahoo, ESPN, Sleeper) use statistical models that combine a player’s recent production (trailing weeks, season averages), opponent defensive strength (yards and points allowed per game by position), weather conditions, game total (projected combined score for both teams), and injury status to generate a weekly point projection. The model weights these inputs and outputs a single projected point total.

Accuracy of Projections
What projections capture. Projections are useful for identifying the range of players expected to score at different levels — a player projected for 18 points has a stronger performance expectation than a player projected for 8 points in the same week, all else equal. The relative ranking of projections (this player is projected higher than that one) tends to be directionally accurate across the field.
What projections miss. Projections do not capture game-script volatility — whether the game will be close or a blowout changes how teams use their players in ways the model cannot reliably predict. They also do not capture within-game variance: a WR who is projected for 9 points might score 0 points (zero targets in a loss) or 25 points (two TDs in a winning game). Projections represent expected value, not outcomes.
When to Override Projections
Trust your own research when you have information the model does not — a player is returning from an absence with an expanded role, a coordinator change creates a new usage pattern, or there is late-breaking injury news that shifts target share. Platform projections update slowly and lag behind news-driven information. When you have a specific, verifiable reason to believe a player’s true expected value is different from their projection, your information should take precedence.
