The red zone touchdown premium: scoring a touchdown from inside the 20-yard line is worth 6 points in fantasy football. A player who has 3 red zone targets per game converts them to touchdowns at roughly a 30–40% rate. That same player who has 7 red zone targets per game converts them at similar rates — but the higher volume creates significantly more expected fantasy scoring. Red zone volume matters more than efficiency.

Red Zone Usage by Position

Running backs dominate inside the 10. Inside the 5-yard line, NFL teams run the ball at higher rates because of the compressed field and the difficulty of passing routes in tight space. Goal-line RBs with 10+ carries per game inside the 5-yard line score touchdowns at the highest fantasy rates of any non-QB position. Identify the goal-line RB on each team — they carry significant fantasy touchdown upside.

Tight ends in the red zone. TEs are disproportionately targeted in the red zone because they are difficult to cover in tight spaces. Elite TEs with red zone target shares of 20%+ are among the highest-floor fantasy assets — their red zone targeting provides a consistent scoring floor regardless of overall game script.


Using Red Zone Usage in Start/Sit

Prioritize red zone usage over total volume in some situations. A player with 4 targets per game but 3 red zone targets is more valuable than a player with 8 targets per game and 1 red zone target in most touchdown-dependent scoring systems. In non-PPR formats especially, red zone usage is the primary driver of fantasy scoring differentials.
