Half-PPR Fantasy Football: How the Scoring Format Changes Your Draft and Lineup Strategy

Fantasy football leagues run in three primary scoring formats: standard (no points for receptions), full PPR (1 point per reception), and half-PPR (0.5 points per reception). Half-PPR has become the de facto standard for many serious leagues and is the default format on most major best-ball platforms.

What Half-PPR Means for Scoring

A player who catches 6 passes receives 3 bonus points (6 × 0.5) on top of yards and touchdowns.

Example: WR with 5 receptions, 62 yards, 1 TD

A pass-catching RB who catches 8 balls per game gets 4 bonus points in half-PPR vs 8 in full PPR — a consistent gap that affects draft positioning and lineup decisions.


How Half-PPR Differs from Standard

In standard, touchdowns and yardage are everything. The half-PPR reception bonus most benefits pass-catching RBs and high-volume slot WRs who would be devalued in standard.

Who benefits most from half-PPR vs standard:

  • Pass-catching RBs: A committee back with 5–7 catches per game is a middling standard scorer but a legitimate fantasy contributor in half-PPR
  • Slot WRs: High-volume slot receivers catching 7–9 balls per game on short routes gain consistent scoring from volume alone
  • High-volume TEs: A TE catching 6–7 passes for 65 yards is a serviceable flex start in half-PPR even without a TD

Who loses relative value vs standard:

  • Goal-line RBs: A back who only enters in short-yardage situations catches few passes. His standard floor is solid; the reception bonus adds little.

How Half-PPR Differs from Full PPR

The gap is most pronounced for high-volume pass catchers:

  • A WR who catches 10 passes gets 5 bonus points from receptions in full PPR vs 5 in half-PPR — so full PPR values him 5 points higher
  • A RB who catches 6 passes per game gets 6 bonus points in full PPR vs 3 in half-PPR — a consistent 3-point weekly difference

In full PPR, elite pass-catching backs and slot WRs are worth significantly more. In half-PPR, the bump for volume receivers is meaningful but not as dramatic. The scoring gap between a WR with 10 catches vs 5 catches is 5 points in full PPR but only 2.5 points in half-PPR.


Half-PPR Draft Adjustments

Running backs: In half-PPR, the distinction between a true bellcow and a committee pass-catcher is less extreme than in full PPR. Prioritize bellcow role security over pass-catching volume. A 20-carry RB in half-PPR will outscore a 6-carry, 7-reception back most weeks. The reception bonus matters but does not transform committee backs into RB1s.

Wide receivers: The premium for slot WRs is smaller than in full PPR. An outside WR on an elite offense catching 6 balls for 85 yards and a TD (11.25 half-PPR) vs a slot WR catching 9 balls for 65 yards (12.25 half-PPR) — the difference is only 1 point. Draft for role and target share, not specifically for slot vs outside alignment.

Tight ends: An elite TE catching 7–8 passes per game gets a 3.5–4 point weekly reception bonus — meaningful but not as large as in full PPR. Positional scarcity still matters, but the upside of the elite TE vs the streaming TE is slightly compressed compared to full PPR.


Half-PPR Lineup Decisions

When choosing between two similarly projected players, favor the player with higher floor opportunity — consistent volume that floors out weekly scores.

Example: Two WR3 options:

  • WR A: Deep threat averaging 3 catches for 62 yards and 0.5 TDs per game (~10 half-PPR per game, high variance)
  • WR B: Slot receiver averaging 7 catches for 55 yards and 0.3 TDs per game (~10.5 half-PPR per game, lower variance)

In full PPR, WR B is clearly better — the reception volume is the primary driver. In half-PPR, the gap is smaller and WR A has more touchdown upside. Need a safe floor → WR B. Need a ceiling play → WR A.
