How Accurate Are Fantasy Football Projections and Expert Rankings? What the Data Shows

Fantasy projections — point totals predicted for each player each week — are one of the most widely used tools in fantasy football. They appear on every major platform, drive automated start/sit advice, and are often treated as ground truth. But how accurate are they?

What Projections Are Based On

Most platform projections combine:

  • Historical player performance
  • Opponent defensive rankings by position (how much they’ve allowed to WRs, RBs, etc.)
  • Injury reports and expected playing time
  • Game totals from betting markets
  • Recent performance trends

The best projections incorporate betting-market game totals and expected team pass rates because those are forward-looking. Simpler models rely on historical averages that are slower to update.


Key Sources of Weekly Error

Touchdowns: Projected at historical rates that don’t reflect true randomness. TDs cluster and miss unpredictably — a player projected for 14 points who scores 2 TDs actually scores 26. Projections systematically underestimate TD variance.

Game script: If a projected close game becomes a blowout, the losing team’s pass-catchers underperform and the leading team’s skill players become situational. Projections can’t predict game script outcomes.

Late injury information: Injury news that breaks Friday or Saturday isn’t fully incorporated into projections published Tuesday or Wednesday. Check projections as close to game time as possible.


Betting Markets vs. Fantasy Projections

Sportsbook-implied team totals often lead fantasy projections in incorporating new information. When a key piece of information breaks — starter injury, weather alert, unexpected lineup change — betting markets adjust faster than fantasy projection systems.

For serious fantasy players, implied team totals from sportsbook lines are more up-to-date than fantasy projections for identifying which offenses are projected to score more in any given week.


How to Use Projections Effectively

Use as a starting point, not a final answer. Projections tell you the baseline expected value. Your job is to find reasons it’s wrong — better information, matchup context, or market inefficiencies.

Weight consensus over individual. If 10 experts project a player for 12–14 points and one projects 22, the consensus view is almost certainly more reliable than the outlier.

Recency matters. Projections published Tuesday use different information than projections published Saturday. The closer to game time, the more relevant the projection.

Use for tiebreakers, not primary decisions. If you’re choosing between two genuinely close players, projections are a useful tiebreaker. If one player clearly has a better role, matchup, and opportunity, trust your analysis over a projection that may be slow to update.
