IDP Fantasy Football: An Introduction to Individual Defensive Players
Most fantasy football leagues use team defense/special teams (D/ST). IDP leagues replace that with individual defensive players: linebackers, cornerbacks, safeties, and defensive linemen — each scoring based on their personal statistics.
IDP rewards managers who understand defensive production. For first-time IDP players, here’s the framework.
How IDP Scoring Works
Individual defensive players earn points based on their personal stats:
| Event | Typical points |
|---|---|
| Solo tackle | 1 |
| Assisted tackle | 0.5 |
| Sack | 4–6 |
| Interception | 6 |
| Fumble recovery | 4 |
| Pass defensed | 1–2 |
| Forced fumble | 3–4 |
| Safety | 4–6 |
| Defensive TD | 6 |
Verify your league’s exact settings — IDP scoring varies more than offensive scoring across leagues.
Position Value Guide
Linebackers (LBs) — Best source of IDP value. LBs are on the field for nearly every defensive snap and make the majority of their team’s tackles. Tackle volume drives floors and ceilings.
Best profile: Three-down LB (plays all downs, not subbed out on passing downs) on a run-stop defense.
Defensive Linemen (DL) — Sack upside, variable floor. Elite pass rushers generate 14–18 sacks per season at 5+ points each. But sacks are highly variable — a premier edge rusher might have 0 sacks for 3 weeks then 3 in one game.
Best IDP profile: Interior DL with consistent tackle production and pressure, not pure pass-rush specialists with near-zero tackle floors.
Safeties (S) — Best DB option. Box safeties and strong safeties generate 5–8 tackles per game on run-down snaps. Better floors than CBs, with turnover upside in zone coverages.
Cornerbacks (CB) — High ceiling, low floor. CBs make fewer tackles than LBs and are avoided by smart offenses as they improve. An elite CB who generates INTs and pass deflections can score 30+ in a game. For “DB flex” spots, safeties are usually safer plays.
First-Time IDP Draft Decision Tree
Before the draft, check your league settings:
How many IDP roster spots? (1 LB, 1 DL, 1 DB = minimal IDP)
(3 LBs, 2 DL, 2 DB = deep IDP)
EARLY ROUNDS (same as your LB1/DL1 tier based on your scoring):
Step 1: Identify the top 3 three-down LBs available.
These are your safest, highest-floor IDP players.
Secure at least 1 elite LB early.
Check for three-down status:
Does he play on passing downs (not subbed out)?
YES → Premium IDP asset.
NO → Run-down specialist. Lower floor, skip for a true three-down LB.
MID ROUNDS (once your offensive core is set):
Step 2: Add an elite pass rusher (edge or interior DL with sack upside).
Accept the variance — sacks make up for empty tackle weeks.
Step 3: Add a box safety if you have a DB slot.
Safer than CBs in weekly matchups.
LATE ROUNDS:
Step 4: Add depth LBs — specifically backups who could inherit
three-down roles if starters are injured.
Step 5: CBs only if you're forced to fill DB slots and safeties are gone.
Take a young CB in an aggressive scheme (man-press, high blitz rate)
who plays the ball rather than playing off coverage.
Common IDP Mistakes
Drafting CBs high because they’re “great players.” Elite CBs are avoided by smart offenses. High NFL CB ranking ≠ high IDP production. Focus on tackle volume and turnover creation metrics, not reputation.
Ignoring snap percentage. An LB who comes off the field on passing downs (a run-down LB) has significantly reduced tackle opportunity. Always confirm three-down status before drafting.
Treating IDP like D/ST. Team defense scoring is smooth and predictable. IDP scoring is highly variable — an excellent IDP player can have a 1-point week. Manage IDP depth the same way you manage your QB and TE depth.
Chasing sack rate without tackle floor. Pure pass-rush specialists who don’t play against the run have near-zero floors. Best IDP players generate both tackles and pressure events.
