Pre-Draft O-Line Research Process

Step 2 — Review offseason moves. Did the team add or lose key linemen? An elite guard + first-round OT added in the same offseason is a sleeper for their RBs. Losing the starting center and left tackle in the same offseason is a red flag.

The Line-Dependent vs. Line-Independent RB
Line-dependent RBs: Power runners, RBs who rely on the line opening lanes, RBs with below-average YAC. These players need a good O-line to produce.
Line-independent RBs: Elite athletic profiles, evasive runners, RBs with high YAC (4.0+). These players can make something out of nothing — partial compensation for a bad line.
The implication: A line-dependent RB behind a bad O-line is a draft risk you can price. An elite athlete with a good line is a premium target at any draft position.
In-Season O-Line Monitoring
Starter injuries: NFL O-line injuries are frequent. Losing a starting guard or tackle is significant — check who the backup is, and monitor how many total starters have changed. A line missing 3 starters is in crisis.
Scheme adjustment signal: If the RB’s carry volume drops mid-season without injury, check if the line is struggling. Coaches abandon the run when it consistently fails. Volume drop + bad line = role may be shrinking indefinitely.
Return from injury (buy signal): When a key lineman returns from a multi-week absence, the run game often improves within 2–4 weeks. This is a buy window for their RB before the production catches up to the improved situation.
