Fantasy Football Opportunity Share: How to Measure True Usage and Find Undervalued Players
Opportunity share tells you how much of the offense a player actually owns. Two players can both be listed as starters while receiving very different amounts of usable volume. A wide receiver on a high-volume passing offense can outproduce a similar player on a low-volume team because his share converts into more raw targets. Opportunity share turns role into a measurable fantasy input.

What Opportunity Share Measures
Opportunity share tracks what percentage of a team’s total offensive opportunities a player receives.
For running backs. Rush share measures what percentage of the team’s total rushing attempts go to one player. A back with a 75% rush share in a team that runs 30 times per game is getting roughly 22–23 carries — a bell cow workload.
A back with a 35% rush share on the same team is getting roughly 10–11 carries — a complementary back role, not a weekly starter.
For wide receivers. Target share measures what percentage of a quarterback’s pass attempts are thrown toward a specific receiver. A WR with a 25% target share on a team throwing 40 times per game is seeing 10 targets — high-volume, reliable production. A WR with a 10% target share is seeing 4 targets — limited and inconsistent.
Why opportunity share matters more than raw stats. A WR who catches 6 passes for 72 yards has a different value depending on how many targets he received. If those 6 catches came on 6 targets — 100% catch rate — that is an efficient player with a reliable role. If those 6 catches came on 14 targets, the player’s target share is high but their efficiency is poor.
How to Use Opportunity Share
Identifying the true bell cow. In a crowded backfield, rush share identifies which back is actually getting the bulk of the work. Two backs can both be “starting” — one with 60% rush share and one with 30% rush share. The first is a weekly starter; the second is a handcuff.
Projecting production after a team change. When a WR moves to a new team, their fantasy value depends on what share of that new team’s targets they receive. Look at available target share: if the top WR on the new team already commands 28% of targets, the addition will compete for the remaining 72% alongside other receivers.
Spotting volume-driven value. A WR who gets 25% target share on a below-average passing offense (20 pass attempts per game) still only sees 5 targets — modest volume. The same 25% target share on an elite passing offense (40 attempts per game) produces 10 targets per game. Volume of the offense matters as much as the share.
Finding undervalued players. The biggest opportunity share value plays are players who are receiving a high share of usage but are underpriced by the market because their team or position is overlooked. A WR with a 22% target share whose team’s passing offense is underrated will be available later in drafts than their opportunity warrants.
Worked Example
Imagine Receiver A has a 20% target share on a team throwing 42 times per game. Receiver B has a 28% target share on a team throwing 24 times per game. Receiver B is more central to his offense, but Receiver A may still see more raw targets because his team throws so much more. The better fantasy read comes from combining share with team volume.
The same idea applies to running backs. A 60% rush share on a team that rarely runs may be less valuable than a 50% share on a run-heavy offense with frequent goal-line chances. Opportunity share is powerful, but it works best when paired with total offensive volume.
Common mistake: using share without multiplying by team volume. A high percentage of a tiny pie can still be a modest fantasy role.
