Strength of Schedule: How Playoff Matchups Change Player Value
Playoff schedule matters.
A player with an elite playoff matchup (weeks 13–17) is more valuable than one with a terrible matchup.
This creates trading opportunities at the deadline.
The Principle
Before deadline (weeks 1–10): Schedule is unknown. All players similar value.
At deadline (week 9–10): Playoff schedule is visible. Some players have soft matchups (valuable), others have hard matchups (less valuable).
After deadline: Schedule is locked. Trades reflect playoff prospects.
The Soft Matchup Advantage
Soft playoff schedule = Easy defensive matchups weeks 13–17
Example:
- RB1 faces Cleveland, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Minnesota in weeks 13–17
- All of these are soft run defenses
- RB1 will score extra points vs. a normal schedule
Value increase: 5–15 points over 5 weeks.
The Hard Matchup Penalty
Hard playoff schedule = Tough defensive matchups weeks 13–17
Example:
- WR1 faces San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, Buffalo, Pittsburgh in weeks 13–17
- All elite secondaries
- WR1 will be covered tightly. Reduced targets/yards.
Value decrease: 10–20 points over 5 weeks.
The Deadline Strategy
At week 9–10 deadline:
Check weeks 13–17 schedules for your starters.
- Soft schedule? Hold. You’re valuable.
- Hard schedule? Sell if possible. Someone else values you higher (they’re not thinking about schedule).
- Average schedule? Neutral. Trade based on value, not schedule.
How Much To Weight It

Do not let schedule override talent. A great player with a bad playoff schedule is still a great player. The edge is at the margin: flex decisions, deadline pivots, and two similarly valued players where one has a cleaner path in the exact weeks you need.
The Worked Example
Week 9: Two RBs are available for trade.
RB A: Currently 120 points. Faces Cleveland, Houston, Indianapolis (soft) weeks 13–17.
RB B: Currently 120 points. Faces Buffalo, Pittsburgh, San Francisco (hard) weeks 13–17.
Decision: Trade for RB A (soft schedule). He’ll gain 10+ playoff points vs. RB B.

The Payoff
Playoff schedule is a hidden edge.
Most managers don’t think about it at the deadline. You can exploit this by trading away hard-schedule players and acquiring soft-schedule players.
