QB Efficiency Metrics in Fantasy Football: How to Evaluate Quarterbacks Beyond Passing Yards

Fantasy managers often evaluate QBs primarily on fantasy points scored. But a QB who scored 30 points last week because of an unusual number of touchdowns is not necessarily more valuable going forward than one who scored 22 points with high volume and clean mechanics.

Volume Metrics: The Foundation

Passing attempts is the raw foundation. QBs who average 35+ attempts per game have higher fantasy production floors than QBs who average 25 attempts, all else equal. This is strongly influenced by team offensive philosophy, game script (losing teams pass more), and coordinator preferences.

Completion percentage indicates accuracy and decision-making. Elite fantasy QBs typically complete 65%+ of their passes — but adjust for depth of target. A QB who throws only short passes will have a higher completion percentage on easier throws than one attacking downfield.


Advanced Efficiency Metrics

Yards per attempt (YPA): Total passing yards / total attempts. NFL average is approximately 6.5–7.0 YPA. Above 7.5 YPA is elite quality-per-throw; below 6.0 is a concern.

Adjusted YPA: (passing yards + 20 × TDs − 45 × interceptions) / attempts. Combines accuracy, explosiveness, and ball security into a single number. Elite: 8.0+; concerning: below 6.5.

ANY/A (Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt): Adjusted YPA that also subtracts sack yards lost — penalizes QBs who take many sacks and rewards those who manage the pocket efficiently.

EPA per play: Expected Points Added measures how much each play increased the expected points the team would score. EPA per play accounts for context: a 3-yard gain on 3rd-and-2 is worth more than a 3-yard gain on 3rd-and-8. QBs with high EPA per play generate value on every dropback — not just in high-volume games or touchdown-heavy weeks.


Touchdown and Turnover Metrics

TD rate: Touchdowns / attempts. Sustainable elite rate is 5–6%. QBs significantly above this rate are likely running hot and will regress; QBs below this rate with intact efficiency metrics may be due for positive regression.

Interception percentage: Elite QBs keep this below 2%. QBs above 3% are creating negative fantasy plays that offset their yardage and touchdowns.

Turnover-worthy play rate (PFF): Passes that should have been intercepted but were dropped, or poor decisions regardless of outcome. More predictive of future interceptions than actual interception rate, which is variable based on luck.


Pocket and Pressure Metrics

Time to throw: Quick-release QBs (under 2.5 seconds average) are less sack-prone and less affected by poor offensive line play.

Pressure rate: A high pressure rate is often a function of poor offensive line play rather than QB decision-making. A QB maintaining decent EPA and accuracy under high pressure is performing impressively given the challenge.


The Regression Trap

The most common QB fantasy mistake: drafting a QB based on a high-touchdown recent stretch without checking if efficiency metrics support sustained elite production. TDs regress to the mean; efficiency metrics (YPA, EPA/play) are more predictive of future value.

  • Buy: QB averaging 0 TDs over 4 games but maintaining high volume and strong efficiency metrics
  • Sell: QB averaging 4 TDs per game over 4 games without elite efficiency metrics to support it
