How Your League's Scoring Format Affects Which Players to Draft

Most free fantasy football rankings default to half-PPR or PPR. If your league uses a different format, those rankings are wrong for your draft. The correction is straightforward once you know which positions move — and by how much.

Format-Specific Draft Priority Guide

Standard Scoring (No PPR)

Move up from generic rankings:

  • Workhorse RBs with 18+ carries/game and minimal receiving role (+1–2 rounds in value)
  • Red zone specialists at every position (TDs are the primary scoring event)
  • QBs in run-heavy offenses (rushing TDs become more differentiated)

Move down:

  • Receiving backs (pass-catching value is zeroed out)
  • Slot WRs who score from volume rather than big plays (receptions add nothing)
  • TEs used primarily as safety valves on short routes (same output, no PPR bonus)

Biggest position change: Receiving RBs drop the most. A pass-catching RB worth 5th overall in PPR may drop to 8th–10th in standard.

Half-PPR Scoring (0.5 per reception)

The baseline format. Most published rankings use this. If your league is half-PPR, default rankings are approximately correct — make minor adjustments:

  • Slight bump for receiving backs and slot WRs
  • Slight downgrade for pure rushers and low-catch WRs
  • No major position re-ordering needed

Biggest adjustment: Receiving backs move up 1–2 positions relative to same-tier pure runners.

Full PPR Scoring (1.0 per reception)

Move up significantly:

  • Receiving backs: An RB with 80+ catches adds 80 PPR points. Move up 2–4 positions from standard value.
  • Slot WRs with 100+ catch potential: Move up 2–3 positions. Their catch volume is their entire value.
  • Elite receiving TEs: Travis Kelce-type players who see 100+ targets become the highest-scoring assets in the format. Treat them as WR1/RB1 tier.

Move down:

  • Pure rushing RBs with 20–30 receptions per season: Drop 2–3 positions from half-PPR value
  • Lower-target WRs who score from big plays over volume: Slight downgrade

Biggest position change: Elite receiving TEs rise most. They can be top-3 picks in full PPR.

TE Premium (+0.5 per TE reception)

Move up dramatically:

  • Elite TEs (top 3 by target share): First-round value. A 100-reception TE in TE premium scores 50 extra points vs. standard. This is a round 1–2 swing.
  • All viable starting TEs: Move up 1–3 rounds

Move down:

  • WR3/WR4 depth becomes slightly less valuable relative to TE depth
  • Generic TE who averages 40–50 catches/year still moves up modestly

Draft implication: If you can get the top TE in round 1–2, take them. The fall-off to the TE2 and TE3 is steep in TE premium leagues. “Waiting on TE” is dangerous.

Superflex (Two QBs)

Move up dramatically:

  • All QBs: Top-12 QBs become first-round picks in 12-team leagues. The QB2 becomes a 2nd-round value.
  • Even backup starters (QB13–QB24) become rosterable in 12-team superflex

Move down:

  • WR3+, RB3+ depth: Gets pushed back as QBs occupy more early picks
  • One-QB-per-team lineups become obsolete — all teams need 2 QBs

Draft implication: Take 2 QBs in the first 5 rounds. If you don’t, you’ll pay a premium for QB2 depth late — or be stuck with the 15th-best QB.

How to Apply This at Your Draft

  1. Confirm your exact league scoring format (check platform settings, not just what you were told)
  2. Identify which position tier adjustments apply
  3. On your draft board, re-rank players within the same tier using format corrections
  4. The biggest edge: when the player next to you is drafting from generic rankings and you’re drafting from format-corrected rankings, you’ll pick the right player at the same position every time
