Target Concentration in Fantasy Football: Why Teams With One Dominant Receiver Create Fantasy Value
Not all passing offenses are equal for fantasy purposes. An offense that throws 40 times a game but spreads targets across 8 receivers may produce fewer elite fantasy WRs than an offense that throws 30 times a game but concentrates most passes on one primary receiver.
Target concentration — how centralized a team’s passing volume is — is one of the best tools for identifying which receivers will be consistently elite fantasy producers.

What Target Concentration Means
High concentration. A team where one receiver gets 30%+ of targets has high concentration. In a 35-attempt game, that is 10–11 targets for one receiver. This is the range of production that supports WR1 fantasy finishes week after week.
Low concentration (spread offense). A team where no receiver gets more than 15–18% of targets distributes volume broadly. Multiple receivers see 6–8 targets each. None of them is reliable as a WR1 because no single player has the volume base to score consistently.
Why it matters. A player with 10+ targets per game has a nearly guaranteed floor. Even if they catch only 60% of targets for 7–8 yards each, they are accumulating enough production to be a reliable starter. Spread-offense receivers do not have this guarantee — their target count varies too much from game to game.
Identifying High-Concentration Teams and Receivers
Team target distribution data. Most advanced fantasy platforms and analytics sites track team target distribution by receiver. Look for the percentage of team targets going to each receiver for the prior season or the current season’s first few weeks.
What to look for:
- WR1 target share: 25%+ is elite concentration; 20–25% is solid; below 20% is spread territory
- The next receiver down: if WR1 gets 27% and WR2 gets 22%, the offense is moderately concentrated — both receivers have value. If WR1 gets 30% and everyone else gets 10% or less, you have a dominant single receiver.
Fantasy Value at Different Concentration Levels
Very high concentration (30%+ to WR1). The WR1 is a cornerstone fantasy asset and should be drafted as a WR1 regardless of other metrics. The WR2 and below have inconsistent, streamer-level value.
Moderate concentration (20–25% to WR1). WR1 is a reliable WR1 or WR2. WR2 may be a solid WR3 or bye-week fill option. Both can be drafted with confidence.
Low concentration (under 20% to any single receiver). Be cautious about counting on any one receiver from this offense as a consistent fantasy starter. These are offenses where individual receiver fantasy value is volatile and game-script-dependent.
Changes in Target Concentration
Offseason personnel changes. Target concentration can shift dramatically when a team adds or loses key receivers. A team that signs a new WR1 may suddenly concentrate targets that were previously spread. A team that loses its top target may redistribute targets to 2–3 players rather than elevating one dominant receiver.
Mid-season injuries. When a WR1 is injured, their targets do not always go to the next WR on the depth chart. Sometimes they spread across multiple receivers. Track which player actually absorbs the target share after an injury, not just who the “replacement” is on paper.
New offensive coordinator. OC changes can fundamentally alter how a team distributes targets. Some offensive coordinators design offense around one dominant receiver; others run a committee approach. Research any HC or OC change for its likely effect on target concentration.
