Receiver A is a 4.4 deep threat who runs go and post routes and lands ~0.3 explosive plays a game — his 70-yard average is lumpy, built on quiet 45-yard games punctuated by 110-yard explosions when a deep ball connects. Receiver B is a possession slot who runs short curls and slants to the same 70-yard average, but almost never breaks 30 — his line is a steady 65–75 every week with essentially no explosive plays.
For fantasy ceiling, they are not the same. Receiver A’s explosive-play profile gives him the 3–4 monster weeks a season that win matchups and best-ball weeks; Receiver B tops out near his average no matter what. In best ball especially — where only your best weeks count — you draft the explosive generator over the possession receiver at the same average, because his upside weeks get counted and his quiet ones get discarded. The manager reading only yards-per-game sees a tie; the one reading explosive-play rate sees which player actually has a ceiling.
Common mistake: ranking pass-catchers by average yardage while ignoring how those yards are produced.
