Fantasy Football Stats That Actually Predict Performance: Thresholds and Decision Guide
Fantasy football rewards managers who understand what drives production — not just who scored a touchdown last week. Touchdowns and total yards are outcomes: they tell you what happened. Target share, snap count, and air yards are opportunity stats: they tell you what will happen next.
The Predictive Stats Hierarchy
Research on large-sample fantasy data consistently shows this order of importance:

The principle: Weight opportunity stats over outcome stats. A WR who scored 25 points on 4 targets had a TD-inflated outlier week. A WR who scored 8 points on 10 targets had a bad efficiency week but excellent underlying opportunity that will produce.
Target Share: The Primary Receiving Stat
Formula: Player’s targets ÷ Team’s total pass attempts = target share
Thresholds that indicate actionable value:

How to use week-to-week: Target share is stable. A WR with 25% target share over 4 weeks will continue seeing approximately 25% of targets. A WR with a single 10-target spike should be evaluated at his season-level share, not the spike week.
The spike filter: Before acting on a single big target week, check: Is his season average within 3 targets of that spike? If a WR normally gets 5 targets and had 10 once, he’s a 5-target receiver who had a good game — not a 10-target receiver.
Snap Share: The Primary RB Stat
Formula: RB’s offensive snaps ÷ team’s total offensive snaps = snap share
Thresholds:

Why snap share beats carry count: A RB who got 20 carries at 55% snap share is a primary starter. A RB who got 12 carries at 75% snap share is also a primary starter — the carries will be there when the game flow demands it. Carries fluctuate; snap share is the more stable signal.
Game script adjustment: Snap share drops when a team leads big (running clock) or trails big (abandoning the run). Look at average snap share across multiple game scripts, not just one favorable game.
Red Zone Stats: The TD Predictor
Why it matters: Touchdowns are the highest-value scoring play (4–6 pts each). The players who get red zone opportunities have a dramatically higher chance of scoring.
Benchmarks:
Running backs:
- 5+ red zone carries per game: Feature back getting goal-line work — elevated TD probability
- 3–4 per game: Regular red zone involvement
- 1–2 per game: Occasional, not a meaningful TD-predictor
Wide receivers:
- 3+ red zone targets per game: Elite red zone WR; start as WR1
- 2 per game: Meaningful red zone involvement; start confidently
- 0–1 per game: Touchdown production is mostly luck
Tight ends:
- 2+ red zone targets per game: Top-5 fantasy TE; high TD floor
- 1 per game: Reliable middle-tier TE
- Below 1 per game: TD production is variance-driven
Air Yards: Target Quality Indicator
Formula: The yards the ball travels through the air before being caught (or not)
What it tells you:
High air yards (70+ per game): The WR is running deep routes. When he connects, he scores big. Best ball and tournament formats love high air-yards WRs.
Low air yards (under 35 per game): The WR is catching short passes. His production is consistent but capped — limited TD ceiling and modest yard upside.
The air yards / actual yards gap:
If a WR consistently generates 80+ air yards per game but only converts 40–50 actual receiving yards, he’s getting open downfield but the QB isn’t hitting him. This is either a QB trust issue, contested catch limitation, or bad timing — investigate which.
If a WR converts 70+ of 90+ air yards per game, he’s elite at tracking and winning downfield balls. The production is real and sustainable.
Yards Per Carry: Efficiency vs. Opportunity
Thresholds:

The sample size caveat: YPC stabilizes at roughly 100 carries. Under 50 carries, any YPC reading can be noise. A RB with a 2.8 YPC on 35 carries has a small and unreliable sample; don’t downgrade him based on that alone.
The scheme filter: YPC reflects blocking quality as much as RB quality. An RB running behind a bottom-5 offensive line won’t post 4.5 YPC even if he’s excellent. Compare YPC to teammates (if they share carries) and look at opportunity quality (run blocking rankings) before judging the player.
Opportunity vs. Score: The Core Framework
The most important weekly concept in fantasy stats:
Opportunity is the input. Score is the output.
When these two diverge — high opportunity, low score (or vice versa) — trust the opportunity.
Example: A WR gets 9 targets, catches 6, totals 55 yards, scores 0 TDs. His score: 11 points in PPR. His opportunity: elite. Start him next week.
Counter-example: A WR gets 3 targets, catches 2, totals 30 yards, scores 2 TDs. His score: 26 points. His opportunity: limited. Don’t expect a repeat.
The buy signal: A player with strong underlying stats (25% target share, 75% snap share, 2 red zone looks per game) who has had 3 consecutive “bad” score weeks due to 0 TDs and bad luck. His opportunity hasn’t changed. His score will regress toward what his opportunity predicts.
The sell signal: A player posting big scores driven by TDs while underlying opportunity (target share, snap share) is weak. The production isn’t sustainable.
Quick Weekly Research Workflow
For each start/sit decision:
- Check target share or snap share (4-week rolling average)
- Check red zone involvement
- Check for injury/snap count change that disrupts the average
- Apply matchup context last (only if two players are very close in opportunity)
