Understanding Motion and Alignment Signals
Pre-snap motion and alignment leak the play before it happens — who moves, how wide receivers split, and where safeties stand correlate mechanically with run vs. pass and with which players get the ball. Reading these signals turns film study into a repeatable edge on player involvement.

Why motion and alignment are more predictive than play-calling aesthetics: watching the film, certain motions and alignments correlate with specific plays; a WR motioning across the formation toward the passing strength indicates a play-action or cross-route pass; a TE motioning to the running direction indicates a power run; these patterns are mechanistic and have high predictability.

The motion framework:
The types: (1) jet sweep motion: a WR or RB motioning across the line at high speed; indicates a jet sweep or similar misdirection play; (2) tight end motion: a TE moving from inline to the slot; indicates a pass play (the TE is becoming a route runner); (3) receiver motion toward the play: multiple receivers moving in the same direction; indicates that direction will receive passing attention; (4) backfield motion: an additional back entering the backfield; indicates power run potential; (5) the no-motion snap: when a team snaps with no motion, it often indicates a play-action pass (the fake is the motion substitute).
How motion affects fantasy positions:
The impact: (1) WR prediction: WRs who motion toward the slot or inside are targeted inside; WRs who motion away from center are decoys; (2) RB prediction: RBs who receive jet-sweep motion are likely carriers; RBs without motion are pass-protection-only backs; (3) TE prediction: TEs who motion from inline to slot are targeted; inline TEs are blocking; (4) pass/run prediction: significant motion toward one direction indicates play-action pass (opposite motion from the run fake direction); motion of extra backs indicates run play.
Reading alignment signals:
The reading: (1) receiver split width: receivers split wide (9+ yards from the numbers) indicate passing plays; compressed splits (5 or fewer yards) indicate run potential; (2) box count: count how many defenders align in the box (LOS + 1 yard deep); more than 7 in the box indicates run defense; 6 or fewer indicates pass defense; (3) safety alignment: safeties over the middle (single-high) indicate run defense (safety ready to support run); safeties deep (two-high) indicate pass defense; (4) linebacker alignment: LBs 5+ yards deep indicate pass defense; LBs at LOS indicate run defense.
Worked Example: Why One TE Is a Weekly Start and the Other Isn’t
Two tight ends have nearly identical box scores through three weeks — similar yards, similar targets — so a manager streaming the position flips a coin between them. Watch the film instead. TE A lines up inline almost every snap and rarely motions; his targets come on checkdowns and busted coverage. TE B repeatedly motions from inline to the slot before the snap, and his team splits its receivers wide in obvious passing sets — he’s being deployed as a route runner, not a blocker.
That deployment difference predicts the future the stat line doesn’t. TE B’s role is structurally target-rich: when the offense shows pass alignments and motions him into the slot, he’s the read, so his target floor is real and repeatable. TE A’s production is incidental to blocking assignments and will evaporate in run-heavy scripts. The manager who reads alignment starts TE B with confidence and fades TE A, while the one who only reads the box score treats two very different roles as the same player.
Common mistake: projecting a player’s future usage purely from past production while ignoring how he’s deployed pre-snap. An inline, non-motioning tight end who happened to catch a few checkdowns is not the same asset as one consistently motioned into the slot out of passing alignments — the second has a structural target role, the first has luck. Read the signals (who motions, receiver splits, box count, safety shells) to judge role, then let role, not last week’s stat line, drive your start/sit and waiver calls.
