Understanding Pass Coverage Matchups
The matchup analysis framework:
The steps: (1) identify the defense’s primary coverage shell: determine whether the opposing defense primarily plays zone (60%+ zone rate) or man (55%+ man rate); the coverage type determines the general exploit framework; (2) identify the specific coverage vulnerability for the receiver’s profile: (a) if zone: which zone type (Cover 2, Cover 3, Cover 4) and which route types beat that specific zone; (b) if man: which man coverage type (press man, off man, cover-zero blitz) and which receiver skills beat that coverage; (3) evaluate the coverage grade of the specific defender covering the receiver: (a) CB grade against the route type your receiver runs most often; (b) safety grade in the specific deep coverage responsibility; (c) LB grade against TE/RB in pass coverage; (4) synthesize the matchup quality rating: favorable = the receiver’s primary routes attack the coverage shell’s vulnerability AND the assigned defender has below-average coverage grade; neutral = mixed signals; unfavorable = the receiver’s routes are aligned with the coverage shell’s strengths OR the assigned defender is above average.
