Value Over Replacement (VOR) in Fantasy Football: How to Rank Players Across Positions
Projections tell you how many points a player is expected to score. They do not tell you how much better a player is compared to the alternative. VOR captures the alternative.

What VOR Measures
VOR answers: how many more points is this player expected to score than the best freely available player at their position?
“Freely available” is defined as the player you could get later in the draft at the same position — typically the marginal starter at that slot in a 12-team league.
Example calculation:
In a 12-team league that starts 2 RBs + 1 FLEX (potentially a third RB), approximately 30–36 RB starts are needed across the league each week. The 30th-best RB is “replacement level” — below replacement, you are in real trouble; above replacement, you have a serviceable starter.
If RB1 is projected for 200 points and the 30th-best RB is projected for 140 points, RB1’s VOR is +60.
If WR1 is projected for 220 points and the replacement-level WR (36th-best in a 12-team league) is projected for 155 points, WR1’s VOR is +65.
WR1 has a higher VOR despite the RB scoring fewer total points — because the WR’s advantage over the replacement player at their position is larger.
Why VOR Matters for Draft Strategy
Without VOR, managers often draft by total projected points — taking the player projected for the most points regardless of position. This consistently overvalues positions where replacement-level players are still productive and undervalues positions where the gap between elite and replacement is massive.
The tight end problem. The gap between an elite TE (150+ points) and a streaming TE (80–100 points) is among the largest in fantasy. A streaming TE costs you 50–70 points per year compared to an elite TE. By contrast, the gap between the 6th-best RB and the 18th-best RB is smaller. VOR captures this — elite TEs have very high VOR relative to their position, which is why they are routinely drafted well above where raw projections would suggest.
Positions with compressed value. At some positions, the replacement level is close to the starter level. Late-round quarterbacks in standard leagues are often serviceable streamers — their VOR is modest because the difference between your starting QB and a streaming QB is 3–5 points per week, not 10–15. This is why QBs go late in standard leagues despite projecting for the most raw points.
How to Apply VOR in Practice
You do not need to calculate VOR for every player yourself — many ranking sites publish VOR-based rankings. But understanding the concept helps you:
Recognize when a position is deep. If the 20th-best WR is projected similarly to the 15th-best WR, there is little VOR gain from taking the 15th WR over the 20th — you can wait.
Recognize when a position is thin. If the 30th-best RB is projected significantly below the 25th-best RB, there is real value in taking the 25th-best RB before someone else does.
Evaluate your own roster mid-draft. When you are deciding between two players, compare their VOR relative to when you would be able to get the next player at their position — not just their raw projection.
