WR Route Running and Fantasy Value: How Route Concepts Affect Wide Receiver Fantasy Production
Route running is the foundation of wide receiver fantasy value. A WR who is not running routes cannot be targeted. A WR who runs routes efficiently creates separation that leads to targets and receptions. Understanding the basics of how route running translates to fantasy production makes you a better evaluator.

Route Participation Rate
What it measures. Route participation rate (also called route run rate) is the percentage of passing plays on which a WR is on the field running a route. A WR with a 90% route participation rate runs routes on almost every passing play; a WR with a 50% rate is used situationally.
Why it matters for fantasy. WRs with high route participation rates have more opportunities to be targeted. If a team throws 35 times per game, a WR running routes on 90% of those plays (31–32 routes) has more target chances than a WR running on 50% (17–18 routes).
Target rate within routes. Once you know route participation, the next metric is target rate within routes run (targets per route). A WR who gets targeted on 25–30% of routes is the clear focal point of the offense. Below 15%, they are a supplemental option.
Route Concept and Fantasy Implications
Underneath routes (screens, slants, crossers). WRs who primarily run short, underneath routes accumulate receptions and yards but rarely score touchdowns from distance. They are PPR-friendly — consistent targets and catches — but low in ceiling upside.
Deep routes (go routes, post routes, corner routes). WRs who run primarily deep routes are targeted less frequently but produce higher-value plays when they are targeted. In PPR, the receptions are fewer; in standard scoring, they catch fewer balls but for more yards per catch. These players have boom-bust profiles.
Full route trees. Elite WRs run full route trees — they threaten the entire field and can beat any coverage. Their route running makes them unpredictable and therefore hard to cover, leading to consistent targets regardless of coverage scheme.
Slot vs. Outside WR
Slot WRs. Slot WRs line up between the hashes, run shorter routes, and are covered by linebackers and nickel corners. They tend to accumulate high reception totals in PPR leagues but score fewer TDs. In PPR, high-volume slot WRs are extremely valuable.
Outside WRs. Outside WRs line up wide, face press coverage from cornerbacks, and are more likely to be taken out of games by elite coverage. They have higher touchdown upside but more coverage variance.
