Best Ball Analyzing Correlation: How Player Correlations Affect Best Ball Roster Building
Most managers draft players they believe will score well in isolation. Correlation analysis asks a different question: which players score well together? In best ball, a week where three players on your roster all spike simultaneously produces a score that no amount of individual talent can match — and correlation is what makes those multi-player explosions predictable rather than random. Understanding which players move together, and building stacks around them, is one of the highest-leverage best-ball edges.
The Correlation Types That Matter

Building a Correlation-Optimized Roster
The intentional stack. Choose a QB and their WR1 (or elite TE) as the core correlated pair. The QB-to-target receiver relationship is the strongest positive correlation in fantasy — when the QB throws for 350 yards, his primary target nearly always contributes. Plan to draft both within a defined round window rather than leaving it to chance.
The 3-player ceiling stack. Add the WR2 or TE from the same offense for a three-player correlated group. In the QB’s best weeks, at least two of his pass-catchers score — that multi-player boom creates the 180–220 point team totals that win best-ball tournaments. Limit correlated groups to 3 players per roster; beyond that, a bad week for the offense tanks too many positions simultaneously.
The bring-back hedge. In large-field tournaments, pair your high-upside QB stack with a receiver from the opposing team. When your QB’s team wins by scoring 35+, the opposing QB is forced to throw more to keep pace — his WRs accumulate targets out of necessity. The bring-back creates a negative-correlation hedge: your QB’s biggest wins may coincide with boom weeks for the opponent’s skill players.
Negative correlation to avoid. Drafting WR1 and WR2 from the same pass-heavy team at the same roster tier creates weeks where one’s great game suppresses the other. When WR1 commands 12 targets, WR2’s share collapses. This is the unintentional negative correlation that silently caps your ceiling — review your roster before finalizing and replace one with a receiver from a different offense.
Worked Example: Two Correlation Builds
Build A — correlated stack: You draft a high-upside QB in round 3, his WR1 in round 5 (planned), and his second pass-catcher in round 9. You add the opposing team’s WR2 as a bring-back in round 14. In the QB’s four best weeks, at least two pass-catchers score — your team posts 160, 190, 175, and 205 in those weeks. The stack’s bust weeks hurt but don’t cost matchups (there are none in best ball). The tournament cashes on the ceiling.
Build B — unintentional negative correlation: You draft a QB in round 3 and separately land both his WR1 and WR2 in rounds 5 and 7 without planning it. When WR1 dominates targets, WR2 goes quiet, and your three correlated players produce net similar to having just QB + WR1. You paid the opportunity cost of two early picks for one player’s effective production. The ceiling you needed never materializes.
Common mistake: drafting WR1 and WR2 from the same two-receiver offense at the same roster position without realizing they compete for the same targets. The market doesn’t flag this — you have to check it. Review your final roster for unintentional negative-correlation pairs and swap one for a receiver from a different offense.
