Best Ball Positional Correlation: How Position Correlations Affect Best Ball Fantasy Football Roster Building

QB-WR1 correlation: the strongest and most consistent positive correlation in best ball is between a QB and their primary WR. When the QB has an elite passing performance, the WR1 on that team typically captures a significant share of the targets and yards — often logging a 100-plus yard, 1 TD game in the same contest the QB threw for 300-plus yards and 3 TDs. Intentionally pairing a QB and their WR1 in the same roster is called a QB-WR stack, and it is the foundational positive correlation strategy in best ball.

Strength of Different Correlations

QB-RB negative correlation. Interestingly, QB and RB from the same team have negative correlation in passing-game-heavy offenses. When the QB explodes for 350 yards and 4 TDs, it often means the offense was throwing all game rather than running — meaning the RB had fewer carries and received fewer checkdown targets. Teams that throw 45 times in a game typically do not run for 120 yards in the same game. This negative correlation means same-team QB-RB combinations are generally avoided in best ball rosters (unlike QB-WR stacks).

Tight end correlation. QB-TE correlation varies more than QB-WR1 correlation because TE usage patterns differ by team system. In offenses where the TE is the primary red zone target (tight end-heavy offenses), the QB-TE correlation can be nearly as strong as QB-WR1 correlation. In offenses that rarely use the TE in the passing game, the correlation is minimal. Best ball managers should assess team-specific TE usage before building QB-TE mini-stacks.


Negative Correlation as Defense

Opponent defense considerations. Building in some negative correlation (players on different teams playing each other, so that one game’s winner benefits your roster) is a form of defensive roster construction. If the Chiefs are playing the Bills, owning both Chiefs WRs and Bills WRs means the game explosion benefits your roster regardless of which team’s passing game dominates. This game-stack strategy captures the upside of a game expected to be high-scoring without betting entirely on one team’s offensive success.
