Best Ball Building Complementary Stacks: How to Create Correlated Upside
Stacking only works if you stack the right offense. Pairing a quarterback with his receiver is the mechanic; choosing which quarterback-and-receiver pair to build around is the skill — and it’s where most best-ball stacks are won or lost before the season even starts. A stack of a low-volume, run-first offense produces a muted, capped ceiling no matter how correlated it is. A stack of a high-volume, pass-happy, shootout-prone offense produces the explosive correlated weeks that win best-ball tournaments. The value of a stack comes first from the offense you choose to stack and second from the players you pair — pick a high-ceiling passing environment, then choose the right pass-catcher within it. Correlation amplifies whatever’s there; your job is to make sure there’s a lot there to amplify.

Choosing the Right Pass-Catcher
Once you’ve picked a stackable offense, the second decision is which pass-catcher to pair with the quarterback. The best correlation comes from the player who shares the most of the QB’s ceiling — usually the target hog or the field-stretching alpha whose big games happen on the same plays that make the QB explode. A peripheral, low-target receiver correlates weakly even on a great offense, because his spike weeks don’t reliably coincide with the QB’s. The deeper play is the bring-back: adding a pass-catcher from a likely shootout opponent, so that if the game turns into a track meet, your stack captures scoring from both sidelines.
Game environment ties it together: a concentrated alpha on a pass-happy offense, stacked with a bring-back in a projected high-total shootout, is the platonic complementary stack — multiple correlated ceilings firing in the same game.
Worked Example: Two Stacks, Different Offenses
Two managers each build a QB-WR stack.
- Manager A stacks a game-managing QB on a run-first, ball-control offense with a muddy receiver room. Even when it goes “well,” the offense throws 25 times and spreads it around — the correlated ceiling is low, and the stack rarely erupts. A capped stack.
- Manager B stacks a high-volume QB and his clear alpha receiver on a pass-happy, shootout-prone offense, then adds a bring-back from a divisional opponent they trade scores with. When that game goes off, three of B’s players spike together. A tournament-winning stack.
Both “stacked.” Only B chose an offense and environment worth stacking — which is the part that actually creates the upside.
Common mistake: stacking an offense just because you like the players, without checking whether it produces the volume and concentration a stack needs. A correlated low-ceiling offense is still a low ceiling — correlation can’t manufacture upside that the offense doesn’t generate.
Pick the Offense First, Then Build
When you build best-ball stacks, start by identifying the high-volume, concentrated, shootout-prone offenses worth tying your week to.
