Best Ball Early ADP: How to Use Early Best Ball ADP Data in Your Draft Preparation

Why early ADP matters: most casual best ball players draft based on name recognition and prior-year performance, not current-year projections. Early ADP reflects this bias — players who had big seasons in the prior year are overvalued, players who underperformed are undervalued. Identifying these market inefficiencies early and targeting undervalued players before the market corrects is a legitimate edge.

Early ADP Quick Reference

Early ADP scenario What it signals Draft action Mistake to avoid
Player drafted 2–3 rounds above projection Market is pricing in regression upward that may not materialize — typically a prior-year overperformer or name-recognition bias Fade: wait for a later round or skip entirely Reaching 2 rounds early for a player because “he’ll go before I pick again” — if your projection says round 10, take him at round 10
Player drafted 2–3 rounds below projection Market undervaluing player — new role, unfamiliar scheme, or prior-year underperformance clouding the real opportunity Draft aggressively at their ADP; your edge is the gap between projection and market price Waiting to see if the player falls further — if your projection says round 8 and ADP is round 10, take him at round 10 before the market corrects
Early ADP before training camp Pre-information baseline — reflects pure market consensus without any 2024 camp data Use to identify pricing, not as a final answer; expect 3–5 round swings after training camp Treating June early ADP as the same as August late-ADP — June is a starting point, not a verdict
Early drafts attract sharper players Early best ball drafters are typically more sophisticated — early ADP may already correct for biases that persist in casual drafts Be aware that value gaps are often smaller in early drafts than in August drafts with casual participants Expecting to find massive market inefficiencies in early drafts — the edge is real but smaller than in August
Tracking ADP movement over time A player whose ADP moves from round 8 to round 5 between June and August is gaining market confidence — the market is getting information you may not have Investigate the ADP movement: if you can identify the cause (new role, training camp buzz), decide whether to buy before the move finishes Ignoring ADP movement as noise — rapid early-ADP movement often reflects a real information event
Using early ADP as a negotiating baseline In dynasty trade conversations, early ADP establishes a starting price point before preseason news inflates or deflates value Reference early ADP when buying — you want to trade before training camp moves the price against you Using early ADP to lowball a player who has already had a training camp breakout — the ADP has moved; use current data

How to Use Early ADP

Identify players drafted above expected value. If a player is being drafted significantly earlier than your projection of their target share or touches justify, that is a player to avoid. The market is pricing in regression upward that may not materialize.

Identify players drafted below expected value. If a player is being drafted 2–3 rounds later than your expected value, draft them aggressively when they reach their ADP. Your edge is the gap between your projection and the market price.

Limits of Early ADP

Preseason events shift ADP significantly. Training camp injuries, surprise role changes, and coaching staff changes can all shift player ADP by 3–5 rounds in days. Early ADP before training camp is a pre-information baseline, not a final answer.

Early drafts attract sharper drafters. Players who draft early best ball are typically more sophisticated fantasy players than average — which means early ADP can already correct for some biases that persist in later drafts. Be aware that you may be competing against sharper players in early drafts.
