Why the standard handcuff rule inverts in best ball: in head-to-head fantasy, handcuffs protect your roster when your RB1 gets injured — you add the replacement on the waiver wire or keep them on your bench for immediate deployment. In best ball, the roster logic is different. The optimal lineup algorithm only uses your roster as-is; there is no tactical deployment of a bench player after an injury. A handcuff who sits on your bench unused until an injury occurs contributes nothing to your weekly optimal lineup in the healthy weeks. What to Draft Instead of Handcuffs
Where to allocate rounds 12–16 without handcuffs. Optimal use of late-round picks: (1) high-ceiling WRs in favorable situations — a WR2 who could step into a WR1 role if the team trades their WR1 has WR2 floor + WR1 ceiling without the 50% health dependency a handcuff has; (2) TEs with a legitimate TE1 path — a backup TE who could start if the team’s TE1 is injured has the same conditional value as a handcuff, but TEs produce better optimal-lineup scores when they hit (TEP format especially); (3) QBs for the streaming approach — a late-round QB has upside in high-passing-volume weeks and costs nothing relative to leaving the position empty; (4) breakout candidates — players entering new roles (new team, new scheme, step-up opportunity) who have legitimate weekly floor even if their ceiling is not elite.

Edge cases where handcuffs have value: (1) a true workhorse pass-catching RB who gets 50+ receptions behind a starter — this player already has meaningful best-ball contribution in the healthy scenario and explodes when the starter is out; (2) a player who could start week 1 — not a handcuff in the traditional sense; (3) in leagues where the roster is limited to 14–16 spots and you have already maxed out WR/TE depth — at that point a handcuff-quality pick is the best remaining option; and (4) the RB behind an elite but historically fragile starter (a player who has missed 8+ games in the prior 2 seasons) — the health probability justifies elevated handcuff consideration.
