Handcuffs in Best Ball: When to Draft Them and When to Ignore Them
In redraft leagues, handcuffs are weekly roster insurance. In best ball, the calculation is different — most managers either over-value or completely ignore them when they should be selective about which situations actually warrant a pick.

The Opportunity Cost Problem
Every draft pick is a ceiling pick in best ball. A boom/bust WR3 taken in the same round as a handcuff has ceiling potential every single week — they could score big whenever their target share spikes. They don’t need a teammate to get hurt to realize their upside.
A pure handcuff’s ceiling is conditional — it only activates if the starter misses games. In best ball, that conditional ceiling is worth less than weekly ceiling potential at the same draft cost.
The rule: Skip handcuffs unless (1) you own the starter, or (2) the player has independent value regardless of the starter’s health.
When Handcuffs ARE Worth Drafting
Independent role player (labeled “handcuff” by the market): A RB getting 5–8 touches per game when the starter is healthy is not a pure handcuff — they’re a rostered contributor who also has a ceiling if the starter goes down. These players are frequently undervalued because the market slaps the “handcuff” label on them. Draft them.
Your starter has injury history: If your RB1 has missed 6+ games in each of the last two seasons, their direct backup’s value bumps 2–3 rounds. The probability of that conditional ceiling hitting is real.
Backup has standalone elite upside: One injury away from a role projecting top-12 RB production in a pass-friendly, efficient offense with a great offensive line. These are legitimate lottery tickets at Rounds 14–16.
Roster Construction Rule
For a standard 18-player best ball roster:
- 2–3 RBs with confirmed starter volume (primary picks)
- 1 handcuff maximum (only if you own the starter or the backup has independent value)
- 4–5 WRs with target upside
- 1–2 TEs
- 2–3 QB options
Going beyond 1 handcuff on a best ball roster is over-indexing on insurance at the expense of weekly ceiling. WRs and TEs with consistent target floors compound far more reliably across 17 weeks than players who only score when another player is hurt.
