Best Ball Lineup Projection: How to Project Best Ball Fantasy Football Lineup Activation

Activation rate fundamentals: a player’s best ball activation rate is the percentage of weeks in which they are selected into the optimal lineup rather than sitting on the bench. A WR with four other WRs at similar production levels will have a lower activation rate than the same WR on a roster where they are clearly the best WR each week. This means roster composition around a player — how many competing players at the same position have similar projected outputs — significantly affects that player’s activation probability.

Stack Effects on Activation

Game stacking increases activation. When a manager stacks players from the same team (QB + WR, or multiple WRs from the same offense), those players tend to produce high scores in the same weeks because team offensive performance correlates across positions. A QB who throws for 350 yards and 3 TDs almost certainly had WRs who scored well in the same game. This correlation increases the probability that multiple stack players activate in the same week, providing a multiplier effect on the roster’s peak weeks.

Negative stack correlation. Stacking from opposing teams on the same week (a WR from Team A and a WR from Team B who play each other) creates a less useful correlation — when Team A’s defense dominates and Team B’s offense struggles, the Team B WR performs poorly in the same week that Team A’s WR performs well, creating a partial offset. Most best ball strategies avoid direct opponent stacking at WR for this reason, while some managers use it deliberately to create floor protection through negative correlation.


Projecting Activation in Late Rounds

Draft round impact on activation. Players drafted in rounds 14–18 are typically high-upside, low-floor picks with sporadic activation probability — they may go 5 consecutive weeks with bench scores followed by two breakout weeks. Late-round picks should be evaluated by their potential activation ceiling rather than their expected weekly average, since their average includes many weeks at zero activation. A late-round WR who might score 40 points twice is more valuable in best ball than one who scores 15 points every week, because the 40-point weeks activate while the 15-point weeks may not.
