Optimal Lineup Rate in Best Ball: What It Means and Why It Matters for Tournament Strategy
In redraft leagues, the measure of a good team is simple: did you score more points than your opponent? In best ball, the platform sets your lineup automatically, so you cannot be “wrong” about who to start. But you can still build a roster that gives the platform more or fewer ceiling options to choose from.
Optimal lineup rate measures how efficiently your roster construction takes advantage of this automatic setting.

What Optimal Lineup Rate Means
Your OLR for a given week is 100% if the lineup the platform chose was the highest-scoring lineup you could have set from your roster. The framing that matters: OLR is not about whether the platform is setting your lineup correctly (it always does, by definition). It is about whether the roster you drafted gives the platform good choices to set — whether your roster is structured so that the automatic best lineup can actually compete.
Why OLR Matters More in Large-Field Tournaments
In a small best ball league (10–12 teams), you need to beat 9–11 managers. A consistently good roster that scores in the 70th percentile each week will likely make the playoffs.
In a large-field tournament (hundreds or thousands of entries), you need to beat nearly everyone over 17 weeks. Consistent 70th-percentile performance is not enough to win or cash at the top payout tier. You need weeks where your roster produces at the 90th or 95th percentile — which requires high-ceiling plays.
High OLR rosters — those where the best available lineup is genuinely elite in the best weeks — produce those 90th-percentile weeks. They do it by having multiple players who can be the week’s top performer at their position, not just reliable floor contributors.
Roster Construction Choices That Affect OLR
Wide receiver depth with upside. A roster with 7 WRs, 3 of whom have genuine WR1 upside, produces a higher OLR than a roster with 7 WRs who are all consistent WR3 types. The platform will automatically slot in whoever is best that week — more upside WRs means more weeks where the automatically chosen lineup is elite.
Stacking. Quarterback-receiver stacks increase OLR because when the QB has a big game, the correlated receiver also has a big game. The platform sets both of them. Without the stack, you might have the QB but not the receiver who caught his touchdowns, reducing the ceiling of your optimized lineup.
Position balance. A roster that is extremely heavy at one position (8 WRs, 3 RBs, 1 TE) has lower OLR at the thin positions. If your TE gets injured and you have no replacement, your TE slot contributes below-average points to your optimized lineup. Balance ensures the platform has good choices at every slot.
The OLR Trade-off: Ceiling vs Floor
Higher OLR approaches — lots of upside players, correlated stacks, boom-or-bust picks — also tend to have lower average floors. The same players who give you 90th-percentile weeks also give you 30th-percentile weeks when their variance is negative.
In a small league, this variance is risky. In a large-field tournament, it is actually the right trade-off: the entry fee is fixed, the upside is capped at the top prize, and you are competing against hundreds of similar entries. Variance helps you stand out.
The correct strategy scales with field size: the larger the field, the more you should sacrifice floor for ceiling. Casual leagues with 12 managers should balance floor and ceiling. Large tournaments should tilt hard toward ceiling and OLR maximization.
