Best Ball Positional Arbitrage: How to Find Position Value Edges in Best Ball Drafts
What creates positional arbitrage: best ball ADP reflects the aggregate preferences of all managers in the market. When a subset of managers systematically overvalues a position group due to name recognition, recency bias, or conventional wisdom, that position becomes overpriced. When a position group lacks name recognition or is evaluated by metrics that do not translate to best ball production, that position becomes underpriced. These are the conditions where arbitrage exists.

Historical Positional Arbitrage Patterns
Mid-round TE overvaluation. The most documented best ball positional arbitrage pattern is the mid-round TE problem — TEs drafted in rounds 4–8 who are not in the elite tier consistently underperform their draft cost relative to what those picks could produce at other positions. The manager market has historically overvalued TE consistency in the middle rounds, drafting players who provide 8–12 PPG with low variance when the same picks could acquire WRs with more best-ball ceiling.
RB undervaluation in later rounds. Conversely, RBs in rounds 8–12 who have secure starting roles in NFL offenses are often available at below-market value in best ball drafts because managers are taking WRs there. A top RB with feature-back volume in a good offense who falls to round 9 because the WR run was heavy earlier is a positional arbitrage opportunity.
Identifying Live Arbitrage in Drafts
Tracking picks made by others. In live best ball drafts, managers who track the positional composition of picks made by all other managers in real-time can identify when a position has been so heavily drafted by the field that remaining players at that position are available below expected value. If the first 12 picks in rounds 9–10 are all WRs, the RBs and TEs available in rounds 11–12 may be accessible at significant ADP discounts relative to their expected production.
