Best Ball Score Correlation: How Correlated Scoring Affects Best Ball Tournament Strategy

The fundamental best ball correlation principle: a passing offense stack correlates positively because when the QB has a big game, his receivers also score. A QB + WR1 stack has a correlation coefficient of approximately +0.60–0.70. This means when the QB goes for 35 fantasy points, the WR1 is likely to have scored 15+ as well — both count toward your best ball lineup.

Positive Correlations to Stack in Best Ball

QB + pass catchers (same team). The most reliable positive correlation in best ball. A QB and his primary receiver share volume — when the passing game is working, both score. This is the core of best ball stacking strategy.

WR + opposing defense (game stack). When a WR on one team is paired with players from the opposing defense (who are expected to generate points off turnovers and field position), you benefit if the game is high-scoring from both sides.


Negative Correlations to Avoid

QB + opposing pass defense. A QB and the opposing pass defense do not correlate positively — when the QB is throwing for 4 TDs, the opposing D/ST is not generating fantasy points from forcing turnovers. Avoid stacking these.

Same backfield RBs. Two RBs from the same team who split carries are negatively correlated — when one RB gets 20 carries, the other gets fewer. Holding both as your primary RBs creates a situation where only one can truly boom.
