Best Ball Weekly Variance: How Weekly Score Variance Affects Best Ball Fantasy Football Strategy
Why variance is more valuable in best ball than redraft: in redraft formats, high-variance players — those who score either very high or very low each week — are difficult to manage because managers must decide when to start them and face the risk of starting them in a bad week. In best ball, the optimizer handles lineup decisions automatically, capturing the high scores while filtering out the bad ones. A WR who scores 5 points one week and 40 points the next contributes his 40-point game to the lineup (when he outscored the other WRs that week) and his 5-point game sits out. The average contribution to the optimizer is higher than the player’s raw average score.

Tournament Field Size and Optimal Variance
Large-field vs. small-field tournaments. In large-field best ball tournaments (hundreds or thousands of entries), only the top 20–25% of rosters advance or win significant prizes. This means consistently good rosters are often not good enough — to win a large tournament, a roster needs to hit high scores in multiple weeks simultaneously, which requires players with the highest ceiling. High-variance rosters are more optimal in large fields.
In small-field best ball tournaments (8–16 entries), consistent production matters more because less separation is needed to finish in the top third. More floor-oriented rosters are relatively better suited to small-field best ball than to massive tournaments.
Identifying High-Variance Players
Usage and target patterns. The highest-variance WRs are deep-threat players who catch fewer targets but for high yardage per reception when they do score — boom-or-bust in the literal sense. Red zone-dependent TEs who are targeted heavily only inside the 20 are also high-variance. RBs with touchdown dependency (few carries but goal-line work) provide variance at the RB position. Collecting multiple high-variance players with touchdown upside is the mechanical implementation of the ceiling-chasing approach favored in large-field best ball.
