Best Ball Value Above Replacement: How to Use Value Above Replacement in Best Ball Fantasy Football

How VOR identifies which positions are scarcest at which draft prices: a player’s VOR score is calculated by subtracting the replacement-level player’s projected score from the player’s own projected score. Position-adjusted VOR accounts for the fact that replacement level differs by position — the 12th WR in a 12-team league is worth more than the 12th RB because WR talent drops off less sharply. A WR with a VOR of +40 is projected to score 40 more points per season than the last-rostered WR; an RB with a VOR of +40 is projected to score 40 more points per season than the last-rostered RB. But because the 13th-plus RB (the waiver pool) is often close in value to the 12th RB (due to RB attrition and depth), RB VOR tends to be lower than WR VOR at equivalent draft prices.

Using VOR at the Draft

VOR as a position-agnostic value framework. When two players at different positions are available at the same pick, VOR provides a position-agnostic way to compare them: take the player with the higher VOR, regardless of position. A WR with VOR+35 available in round 5 is more valuable than an RB with VOR+20 available in the same round — even if you already have 3 WRs and only 1 RB. This logic runs against the instinct to “balance” roster construction by position, which is often a mistake in best ball because the best-ball format selects top performances automatically, making total roster upside more important than positional balance.

VOR changes with draft context. VOR is a pre-draft calculation, but draft context changes it dynamically. If 5 elite WRs have been taken by round 3 and the WR replacement level has dropped because the best WRs are off the board, the VOR of the remaining WRs has decreased (they score more than the replacement level, but the replacement level has risen as better WRs were taken earlier). Managers who track how positional replacement levels shift as a draft progresses can update their VOR calculations in real time to reflect the available player pool.


Limitations of VOR in Best Ball

VOR assumes linear value, best ball is non-linear. The core limitation of VOR in best ball is that standard VOR assumes linear value (scoring more points is always better in a linear way), but best ball rewards ceiling rather than pure expected value. A player who projects to VOR+30 but has a ceiling of 20 points per game is less best-ball-valuable than a player who projects to VOR+25 but has a ceiling of 40 points per game — the high-ceiling player’s massive weeks are worth more in best ball than the standard VOR calculation captures. Managers should treat VOR as a starting framework and adjust upward for ceiling and downward for consistency in best-ball-specific applications.
