Best Ball Value Over Replacement: How VOR Works in Best Ball Fantasy Drafts

The core VOR insight: the value of a player is not his raw point total — it is his raw point total minus what you would have gotten anyway by drafting a player at the same position in the late rounds. A WR who scores 250 PPR points in a league where the replacement-level WR scores 180 has 70 points of VOR. A RB who scores 280 points where replacement RBs score 240 has only 40 points of VOR, making the WR more valuable despite lower absolute scoring.

VOR Quick Reference

VOR concept How it applies Draft action Mistake to avoid
Replacement level definition The Nth player at a position where N = (teams × starters); in a 12-team league with 2 RB starters, RB replacement level = RB24 Build your VOR model before the draft; know the replacement level for each position Using a fixed VOR model without calibrating it to your specific league size and roster format — replacement levels shift meaningfully between 10-team and 14-team leagues
Cross-position comparison WR2 vs RB2 at the same pick: calculate each player’s VOR; the one with higher VOR provides more draft value regardless of absolute point totals Use VOR to decide between equivalent-ADP players at different positions Always taking the player with higher raw projections regardless of position — a WR with 220 projected points may have higher VOR than an RB with 230 projected points if RBs are deeper
Best ball VOR modifier: variance > consistency Best ball optimizes for ceiling, not floor — high-variance players produce more value than VOR suggests because their boom weeks count without any bench decisions Add a variance premium to high-upside, low-consistency players in best ball VOR calculations Applying standard season-long VOR directly to best ball without adjusting for the format’s preference for ceiling over floor
Positional scarcity in VOR Tight end is the highest-VOR position at the top tier because there are so few elite producers — the gap between TE1 and TE12 is enormous VOR at TE justifies early picks for elite TEs even though the absolute point totals are lower than elite WRs Ignoring TE premium VOR — the top 3 TEs often have the highest VOR in the draft because the drop-off to replacement is so steep
VOR limitations: no time value VOR measures full-season contribution equally, but best ball scoring is weekly — a player who dominates weeks 1–8 and disappears weeks 9–17 scores differently than a consistent player with the same seasonal total Supplement VOR with weekly variance analysis for best ball specifically Using VOR as the only evaluation tool without accounting for the weekly nature of best ball optimization
When VOR and consensus ADP conflict If your VOR ranks a player 15 spots higher than ADP, draft him 5–10 picks early; VOR disagreements with ADP are where your biggest edges live Trust large VOR-ADP gaps as actionable information; ignore small gaps (within 3 picks) as noise Ignoring your VOR model when it conflicts with consensus ADP — the entire point of VOR is to give you systematic insight beyond the consensus

How to Apply VOR in Best Ball

Identify position replacement levels. The replacement level for each position is approximately the expected production of the Nth player at that position, where N equals the number of teams multiplied by the number of starters. In a 12-team best ball with 2 RB starters, the RB replacement level is approximately the RB24.

Use VOR to compare across positions. When deciding between a RB2 and a WR2 at the same pick, calculate each player’s VOR. The one with higher VOR provides more draft value even if the WR has lower absolute scoring.

VOR Limitations in Best Ball

VOR assumes linear point values. VOR treats all points equally. In best ball, where the optimizer selects the best lineup each week, variance and ceiling matter more than in season-long redraft where consistency is rewarded. High-variance players may be worth more in best ball than their VOR suggests.
