Best Ball Volatility: Why High-Variance Players Can Be More Valuable Than Consistent Scorers

Why Volatility Has Value in Best Ball
The floor does not matter. In season-long redraft, a player who scores 3 points in a critical week hurts you. In best ball, that same player’s 3-point week simply does not count — another player on your roster steps in. The floor of a player’s distribution is irrelevant in best ball.
The ceiling matters most. What matters is a player’s ceiling — the peak score they can produce in their best weeks. A player who scores 5, 6, 7, 5, 35, 8, 5 points over a 7-game stretch contributes a 35 in one week and their other scores sit on the bench. A player who scores 14 every week contributes 14 in every week — better average, but the same ceiling.
Boom-or-bust players produce tournament-winning weeks. In a large best ball tournament, winning the championship requires outscoring hundreds or thousands of other teams in the playoff rounds. Only players who have boom weeks produce the scores that separate your team from the field. Consistent players contribute reliable points but rarely create separation.
How to Apply This in Draft Strategy
Target boom-or-bust WRs in middle rounds. Wide receivers who are boom-or-bust — high-target ceiling when their team is throwing downfield, but inconsistent when the team runs heavy or the game script is one-sided — have depressed ADP because season-long players avoid them. In best ball, this discount is a gift.
Value TD-dependent players. Players who score most of their points through touchdowns (goal-line RBs, red-zone WRs) have high variance by nature. Touchdowns are clustered — a player can go 3 weeks with none, then score twice in one game. This volatility is a best ball feature, not a bug.
Avoid capping volatility by picking consistency. If you have two similar players at the same ADP and one is more consistent while the other is more volatile, the volatile player is better for best ball. Do not default to consistency out of habit.
