Variance in Best Ball: Why High-Upside Players Win Best Ball Leagues

In a season-long redraft league, a player who scores 3 points one week and 30 the next is a headache. You have to decide each week whether to start him — and you will be wrong half the time. A player who scores 12 points reliably every week is much easier to manage.

Why Variance Is Valuable in Best Ball

The auto-lineup effect. In best ball, your lineup is set automatically using your highest-scoring players each week. Your 3-point weeks from a high-variance player are invisible — they simply do not appear in your lineup. Your 30-point weeks get counted at full value.

This creates an asymmetry: the downside of variance is hidden, but the upside is fully captured.

The mathematical benefit. If you have two WRs who both average 12 points per game, the one with more variance wins you more weeks. The consistent WR scores 12 and contributes 12. The volatile WR scores 3 some weeks (hidden) and 28 others — those 28-point weeks are the weeks he gets counted and wins you the best ball lineup slot. His average contribution to your scored lineup is higher than his raw average.


How Variance Affects Draft Strategy

Prefer ceiling over floor. In best ball, draft players with high ceilings even if their floors are poor. A WR5 on a top-10 offense who could have monster games is more valuable than a safe WR3 on a run-heavy team who consistently produces but never explodes.

Target WRs on explosive offenses. High-scoring NFL offenses (pass-first teams with 35+ points per game averages) generate more upside weeks for their WRs. A WR3 on a top-3 offense might outscore a WR2 on a mediocre offense in best ball because the upside of those massive game weeks is so high.

Volume + volatility. The ideal best ball receiver has high target volume (floor protection) AND high per-target production (volatility upside). A WR with 120 targets and 18 yards per reception is a best ball dream — they will have enough targets to be counted regularly AND enough big plays to post massive individual weeks.


Positions Where Variance Matters Most

Wide receivers. WRs have the most variance of any skill position. A WR can catch 2 passes for 18 yards (bad week) or 10 catches for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns (all-time week). This range means WR is where variance-seeking has the most impact on best ball outcomes.

Quarterbacks. High-upside QBs — mobile QBs who can add rushing touchdowns, QBs on teams that play from behind and throw frequently — have more variance than traditional pocket passers. In best ball, drafting a high-variance QB in the late rounds rather than a boring safe starter is often the better choice.

Running backs. RBs have less variance than WRs in most cases, but certain RB profiles generate variance: pass-catching RBs on pass-first offenses, RBs who get goal-line carries (touchdown variance), and handcuffs who could become startable if the lead back gets injured.


The Stack: Amplifying Variance Through Team Stacks

Stacking a QB with one or more of his pass catchers amplifies variance. When the QB throws a TD to the stacked WR, you score on both: the QB gets the passing TD points AND the WR gets the receiving TD points.

In a standard game, a stack produces either a muted outcome (when the passing game underperforms) or an outsized outcome (when the passing game explodes). The good weeks compound. This variance amplification is one of the primary reasons stacking is standard best ball strategy.
