Best Ball WR vs RB Ratio: How to Balance Wide Receivers and Running Backs in Your Draft

There is no single correct WR-to-RB ratio in best ball — but there are ratios that optimize for different strategies. The standard 18-round best ball draft (with 2 QBs, 2 TEs mandated) leaves roughly 14 picks for RBs and WRs. How you allocate those 14 picks determines your team’s character.

Common Best Ball Ratios

8 WR / 6 RB. This is a balanced ratio that leans slightly toward WRs. It ensures enough RB depth to handle inevitable injuries and bye weeks while still building significant WR upside. Good for managers who want a solid floor alongside ceiling potential.

9 WR / 5 RB. WR-heavy. This ratio maximizes WR lottery tickets and correlated stack potential. You are accepting thin RB depth (potentially only 2–3 RBs with real roles) in exchange for more WR upside. Viable if your early-round RBs are elite and your late-round WRs have strong upside.

7 WR / 7 RB. Balanced. This approach works if you believe RBs will provide consistent enough production to anchor weekly scores. Increasingly less popular among advanced best ball players who prefer WR-heavy approaches.


The Trade-Off in Plain Terms

More WRs = more chances at a WR explosion game each week, but thinner RB floor. More RBs = better RB depth and insurance against injuries, but fewer WR lottery tickets.

In best ball specifically, the WR-heavy approach is generally preferred because WR variance is higher and best ball rewards ceiling over floor. RBs who do not have clear lead-back roles contribute little even in best ball — so shallow RB depth is less damaging than in standard leagues.
