Why Zero-RB Is Stronger in Best Ball Than Season-Long
The best ball format argument: In season-long fantasy, a 4-point RB week hurts — you’re stuck with it. In best ball, your lineup is automatically set to your best scorers. RB floor doesn’t matter; only RB ceiling does.
The RB positional reality: Below the top 8–10 running backs, the position is extremely volatile. Injuries, coach changes, and workload splits can eliminate a RB’s value within a week. In best ball, you can’t respond — no trades, no waiver claims. Your RB roster is permanent. Committing Round 2–3 capital to a volatile position is the highest-risk allocation in best ball.
The WR ceiling argument: Your best 4–5 WR weeks across the season are your primary point scorers. Stacking premium WRs in Rounds 1–3 raises those best weeks. If those spots are occupied by mid-range RBs, you’re limiting the ceiling of your highest-scoring weeks — exactly when tournament advancement is decided.
What Zero-RB Actually Means
Zero-RB doesn’t mean taking no running backs. It means not taking a running back in your first 3–4 rounds. After Round 4, you’re drafting RBs in the mid-to-late rounds looking for:
- Handcuffs to elite bellcow RBs — if the starter goes down, your backup inherits 20–25 carries per game
- Backup starters in strong run-first offenses — enough opportunity when healthy starters rest
- Lottery-ticket RBs in situations where the starter is injury-prone and the role could open
When Zero-RB Makes Sense
Elite WRs are available in Rounds 1–3: If your first 3 picks can all be WRs with 20%+ target share, the ceiling of your best weeks is extremely high. Zero-RB pays off when genuine elite WR options are there to take.
The early-round RBs are overpriced or risky: If the available Round 2–3 RBs have injury history or volatile workloads, skipping them isn’t Zero-RB ideology — it’s rational value evaluation.
The late-round RB market has real options: Zero-RB needs late-round RBs with legitimate upside to work. Check whether the draft class has strong backup situations, handcuffs, or injury-adjacent opportunities before committing.
When Zero-RB Is a Mistake
A top-3 bellcow is falling: If a true bellcow RB slips to Pick 5 or later because the field ran on WRs, take them. Zero-RB is a default approach when WR value exceeds RB value — not an override when clear bellcow value presents itself.
The WR pool is weak at your pick: If elite WRs are gone in Rounds 1–2 by the time you pick, forcing more WRs means taking worse WRs than available RBs at the same slot. The strategy works when there are quality WRs to take, not as an ideological override.
Round 8 and you still have zero RBs: By Round 7–8, you need 1–2 RBs who can produce. No RBs by Round 8 isn’t Zero-RB — it’s leaving yourself exposed to simultaneous WR cold stretches with nothing behind them.

The risk: You finish the draft with 3–4 late-round RBs, none with bellcow roles, and none break out. Your RB contribution is minimal all season and your WR1 goes on IR in Week 4.

- Take at least 1–2 handcuffs in Rounds 7–10 if bellcow starters are drafted in Rounds 1–3
- Target RBs with paths to expanded roles, not just filler
- Don’t use Zero-RB if the late-round landscape is genuinely barren
