Best Ball Zero RB Zero WR Strategy: Positional Draft Extremes and When They Work

Why understanding zero RB and zero WR as strategies matters for best ball: zero RB (taking WRs and TEs exclusively in the first 4–5 rounds, then loading up on RBs in the later rounds) is the most widely debated best ball strategy because it forces an explicit choice: maximize WR depth at the expense of early RB quality, or vice versa. Zero WR does the opposite. Neither is universally correct — each has contexts where it outperforms. Understanding the conditions under which each strategy works helps managers adapt their approach based on the specific draft board rather than rigidly committing to one approach before seeing which players are available.


Zero RB and Zero WR Strategy

The logic of zero RB in best ball:

The case for: (1) RBs are the most injury-prone position; the expected number of RBs drafted in rounds 1–4 who play a full season at their drafted production level is lower than the same rate for WRs and TEs; (2) late-round RBs can provide significant upside if an early-round back is injured and the handcuff takes over; but the same scenario with WRs is more limited (a late-round WR rarely becomes a WR1 due to a teammate’s injury at the rate that a handcuff RB does); (3) WR production curves are longer and more stable than RB production curves; a first-round WR is likely to produce for 5+ years; a first-round RB may have a 2–3 year production peak before injury or age; (4) in high-ADP environments where RBs are priced at slight premiums, the zero RB approach can systematically acquire WR value that the market has not fully priced.

The logic of zero WR:

The case for: (1) in formats or drafts where RBs are undervalued relative to WRs at early positions, loading up on RBs (and getting WRs in the middle rounds) can exploit the market’s WR bias; (2) some high-volume RBs in featured roles produce point totals that rival WR1s; taking 2–3 of these backs in early rounds can build a massive floor; (3) in certain score formats (standard, not PPR), RBs score more relative to WRs; zero WR is more viable in standard than PPR where WR catch counts are multiplied; (4) late-round WRs who are on high-target-share offenses can produce WR2/WR3 numbers even in later rounds, making the WR-heavy middle rounds a potentially high-value exchange.

When zero RB fails and when it works:

The calibration: (1) zero RB fails when late-round RBs do not produce due to committee situations, injuries, or poor blocking; the strategy relies on RB volume being available in rounds 8–15; when all RBs go in rounds 1–7, zero RB is forced and not strategic; (2) zero RB works best when the draft board is saturated with early-round RBs and the WR pool falls off sharply after round 6–7; the relative value of WRs is higher when the WR ADP is suppressed; (3) zero WR fails when the mid-round WR pool is thin; if rounds 7–12 have no quality WRs, zero WR leaves a WR-thin roster; (4) both strategies are ultimately board-dependent — the best players available in each round shape whether the extreme strategy is optimal; combine with the defense strategy and the best ball draft strategy hub to maintain construction discipline while being flexible about positional extremes.
