Best Ball Scoring: How Best Weeks Work and Why They Change Everything

Most best ball drafters know that you are not setting a lineup — the platform auto-starts your best players each week. What many do not fully understand is how the tournament scoring actually works across the full season.

Regular Season: The Best-Week Count

In the largest best ball formats (like Underdog’s Best Ball Mania), the regular season consists of Weeks 1–14. Your team scores accumulate across those weeks, but typically only your best 13 of 14 weeks count — one week is dropped.

The drop week matters most when multiple key players are on bye in the same week or when you have a significant injury early in the season. For most rosters, the drop applies to the lowest-scoring week and provides a small floor protection against catastrophically bad weeks.


The Playoff Structure

Best ball tournament formats typically have playoffs in Weeks 15–17:

  • Regular season ends Week 14
  • Top percentage of regular season scores advance to playoffs
  • Weeks 15, 16, and 17 are playoff rounds, each advancing the top scorers

The Week 17 problem: NFL teams that have locked up seeding often rest starters. Your best ball playoff roster needs players who will actually play in Weeks 15–17. A player on a team that typically rests players late is less valuable in best ball than a similar player on a team that plays everyone through the end.


How Bye Weeks Interact With Best-Week Scoring

When your starters are on bye, your bench players cover automatically via auto-set. If your bench has quality players, a bye week for your top players is not a disaster — the bench fills in and the week might still score respectably.

Multiple byes in the same week: If 5 of your 8 WRs have bye weeks in the same week (rare but possible), you are relying on 3 WRs to fill all WR slots. Check when drafting: avoid concentrating too many players from the same NFL team or bye week cluster.


What Best Weeks Requires: Peak Upside

You are not looking for the player with the highest average — you are looking for the player with the best peak weeks.

The peak week concept: A WR who averages 12 PPR per week contributes 12 points every week he starts. A WR who averages 9 PPR but has four 30-point weeks and several 2–3 point weeks contributes differently in best ball — the four 30-point weeks are your best weeks at WR; the 2–3 point weeks do not even start (other WRs cover).

The boom-bust WR can be more valuable in best ball than the consistent WR if his boom weeks are high enough.

This is the core argument for WR-heavy strategies: WRs have higher scoring variance than RBs. They are more likely to have blow-up weeks. Best ball rewards that variance because the best weeks count and the bad weeks get replaced by others on your bench.


Key Drafting Implications

Prioritize ceiling over floor: A player with a 30-point ceiling but a 3-point floor is more useful in best ball than a player with a 16-point ceiling and a 12-point floor.

Stack correlated players: A week where your QB throws for 380 yards and 4 TDs and his WR catches 9 targets for 127 yards and 2 TDs is your best week at both positions. Stacking manufactures peak weeks.

Load depth at WR: With 8+ WRs, any of them can be your “starter” in a given week based on auto-set. You are running a WR lottery each week — depth buys more lottery tickets.

Worked Example: Boom Weeks Beat Useful Averages

Two receivers finish with similar season totals. One scores between 9 and 13 points almost every week. The other has several quiet games but posts multiple 25-point weeks. In a format that rewards best weeks, the second player can matter more because his spike weeks actually enter the optimized lineup.

This does not mean every pick should be volatile. It means bench and late-round picks should be evaluated by whether they can create counted weeks, not whether their full-season average looks comfortable.

Common mistake: drafting for average weekly score without asking how often the player can crack the best-ball lineup. The format rewards usable peaks, not tidy averages.

Regular Season Versus Playoffs

Regular-season builds need enough stability to advance. Playoff builds need enough ceiling to beat other advanced teams. A roster that only survives may not have the spike power to win later. A roster that only spikes may never reach the playoff window.

The best-week format asks you to balance both timelines. Draft enough weekly production to stay competitive, then layer in players whose best games can arrive when advancement or elimination is on the line.

How To Use The Drop Week

The drop week should not make you careless, but it should reduce fear of one ugly score. A roster can carry a bye pileup, an injury week, or a bad matchup if the rest of the build is strong. That flexibility is why ceiling picks are more viable than they would be in a format counting every weak score equally.

Still, do not create multiple drop weeks by accident. If several positions are thin, the roster may have more bad weeks than the format can forgive.
