Best Ball Stacking Strategy: The Core Mechanic That Wins Tournaments

Best ball is fundamentally different from redraft. No lineup decisions, no waiver wire — just draft and watch. But if you draft the same way you would for redraft, you’ll lose.

The mechanic that separates winning best ball rosters from losing ones is stacking.

Stacking means drafting multiple players from the same NFL offense so that when that offense has a big game, multiple players on your roster benefit simultaneously — and the best ball system uses them all.

This guide covers what stacking is, why it works mathematically, and the specific stack types that produce consistent results.


Why Stacking Works in Best Ball

In redraft, you generally want roster diversity. If your QB throws a touchdown and your WR catches it, you’ve scored on one play — but if you have two players from that offense, you’re exposed to having two low scorers in a bad offensive week.

In best ball, the logic inverts.

Your weekly score is always your optimal lineup — the algorithm automatically starts your best players. If two of your WRs both score big in the same week, the system uses both. There’s no penalty for having two players from the same offense have big games simultaneously.

The benefit: when a high-scoring game happens (every offense has them), you’re concentrated in it. The risk: when that offense has a bad game, multiple rostered players underperform. But the system mitigates this — it uses your other players in bad weeks.

The math: A roster with two players from a high-ceiling offense will have higher peak weeks than a perfectly balanced roster, with no meaningful downside during bust weeks (because your non-correlated players carry the week).

Higher ceiling wins best ball tournaments. Stacking is the mechanism.


The Three Stack Types

Single Stack: QB + Primary WR

The foundational best ball stack. Draft a QB and his primary WR target in the same draft.

How it works: When the QB throws for 350 yards and 3 touchdowns, the primary WR likely catches multiple passes for meaningful yards and at least one score. Both players have big weeks simultaneously — and the system uses both.

What to look for in a single stack:

  • A high-volume QB (30+ attempts per game average)
  • The QB’s #1 target with a 25%+ target share
  • An offense that runs at or above the league average in pass attempts

When single stacks work: Any time you want correlated upside at two positions without heavy concentration risk. Single stacks are the most common best ball configuration.


Double Stack: Two Stacks at Different Offenses

Take two single stacks from two separate offenses. In a 12-team league with 15 roster spots, a double stack might look like:

  • QB1 + WR from Offense A
  • WR + TE from Offense B

Why add a second stack: Diversifies which offense delivers your peak week. If Offense A has a bad game, Offense B’s stack picks up the slack. When both have big games simultaneously, the ceiling is extraordinary.

Construction notes: Don’t make all four players from the same two positions — a QB from Offense A, his WR1, and two WRs from Offense B works well because you have QB points in one stack and two WR ceiling plays in the other.


Bring-Back Stack

The most advanced stack type. The mechanic: you own a player from Team A AND a pass catcher from Team A’s opponent (Team B) in a specific high-scoring matchup.

The logic: High-scoring games produce big stats for pass catchers on both teams. If Teams A and B play in a shootout (over 55 total points), receivers on both sides benefit from the pace.

Bring-back example:

  • WR from Team A (your primary WR stack)
  • WR from Team B (the opponent, a “bring-back”)

Both players benefit if the game is a shootout, regardless of which team wins. The bring-back captures upside from the opponent’s offense.

Why bring-backs work in best ball but not redraft: In redraft, you’d never roster two WRs playing each other (if one has a good game, the opponent’s defense often held the other). In best ball, both can have big games in a shootout, and the system uses both in your optimal lineup that week.

How to construct: Identify game environments that are likely to produce shootouts (teams with weak defenses and high-scoring offenses matching up). Draft one player from each side.


Building Your Roster Around Stacks

A draft-ready best ball roster for a 15-spot roster might look like:

Spending plan:

  • 1 primary WR stack target (WR1 from a pass-heavy offense — invest draft capital here)
  • QB that correlates (draft the QB at his ADP or 1–2 rounds later)
  • 1–2 additional WRs from a second offense for a secondary stack
  • Bring-back WR target from a projected shootout matchup

Stack density rule of thumb: 6–8 players in your starting lineup should be correlated with at least one other rostered player. Full independence across all 15 roster spots is anti-stack and a losing structure in competitive best ball.


Stack Selection Before the Draft

Before your draft, map out 3–4 stack targets. For each, identify:

  1. The primary offense — which NFL teams are projected to pass frequently? (High over/unders on Vegas totals, weak defenses in the schedule)
  2. The correlations — which players go up and down together in that offense? (QB + WR1, WR1 + WR2 in a two-WR target share offense, QB + TE in a TE-heavy scheme)
  3. The bring-back candidates — which teams are likely to play each other in the high-scoring game-script your stack is designed for?

Rank your stack targets before the draft. When one becomes unavailable (your target QB or WR is taken), shift to your next-best stack rather than abandoning the strategy.


Common Stacking Mistakes

Stacking without correlation. Two WRs from the same offense isn’t always a stack in the useful sense — if one is a volume-dependent slot receiver and the other is a deep-ball specialist, their big games may not overlap. True correlation means both players benefit from the same offensive script (high-volume passing, aggressive red zone usage).

Taking only the WR in the stack and skipping the QB. The QB adds correlated ceiling to the WR’s upside. If you draft a WR because of the offense but then don’t have the QB, you own half the stack and miss the full ceiling benefit.

Building three stacks from three offenses. Concentration is the goal. Two well-constructed stacks with a bring-back is stronger than three loose stack pairings across six different players.

Not adjusting stacks for schedule context. In best ball formats with playoffs, roster players from offenses with favorable playoff-week schedules (Weeks 14–16 for most platforms). A strong regular season stack that plays three strong defenses in the playoff rounds will underperform.


Stacking is a shift in how you think about roster construction. Instead of “who is the best player available?” the best ball question is “who is the best correlated group of players I can draft?” The answer wins more weeks, more points, and more best ball tournaments than any individual player selection strategy.
