Best-Ball Distribution Strategy: Spreading Upside Across Weeks
In best-ball, you want boom weeks spread across 17 weeks, not bunched into one or two.
Draft high-ceiling players across all positions and depth, so that every week has 3–4 players capable of 20+ points. Auto-fill will use them when they boom.
The Anti-Distribution Mistake
Bad approach: Stack all ceiling into QB + WR1 + TE
- Week 1: QB booms (35 points), WR busts (8 points), TE busts (5 points) = 48 points
- Week 2: QB busts (12 points), WR booms (30 points), TE booms (18 points) = 60 points (but auto-fill benches the bust QB, starts the two booms = 48 points)
Problem: Ceiling is “lumpy” (clustered weeks, dead weeks)
The Distribution Approach
Good approach: Spread ceiling across positions and depth
- QB (35-point ceiling)
- WR1 (28-point ceiling)
- WR2 (22-point ceiling)
- WR3 (18-point ceiling)
- RB1 (26-point ceiling)
- RB2 (20-point ceiling)
- TE (20-point ceiling)
- Bench WR (16-point ceiling)
- Bench RB (14-point ceiling)
Now every week, you have multiple players capable of booming.
- Week 1: QB booms (35), WR3 booms (18), TE booms (20) = top 3 auto-fill = 73 points
- Week 2: WR1 booms (28), RB1 booms (26), Bench RB booms (14) = top 3 auto-fill = 68 points
Outcome: Multiple boom players every week, auto-fill captures the highest 3.
The Depth Strategy
Don’t starve your bench.
You need 2–3 players at each position (QB, RB, WR, TE) with ceiling potential.
Example 15-player roster:
- QB: Mahomes (35 ceiling), Jalen Hurts (30 ceiling) — TWO QBs
- RB: Saquon (26 ceiling), Alvin Kamara (22 ceiling), Jaylen Warren (18 ceiling) — THREE RBs
- WR: Jefferson (28 ceiling), Tyreek Hill (25 ceiling), A.J. Brown (24 ceiling), Gabe Davis (18 ceiling) — FOUR WRs
- TE: Kelce (22 ceiling), Trey McBride (16 ceiling) — TWO TEs
Combined ceiling per week: 35–45 points (not 20).
The Auto-Fill Logic
Auto-fill starts the top 3 weekly scorers at each position.
If you have:
- QB ceiling: 35 points
- RB ceiling: 26 points
- WR ceiling: 28 points
- TE ceiling: 22 points
- Bench WR ceiling: 18 points
Auto-fill will use: 35 + 26 + 28 + 22 + 18 = 129 points (if all boom in the same week, unlikely but possible)
vs.
If you have:
- QB ceiling: 35 points
- RB ceiling: 18 points
- WR ceiling: 20 points
- TE ceiling: 15 points
- Bench WR ceiling: 12 points
Auto-fill will use: 35 + 18 + 20 + 15 + 12 = 100 points
Distribution adds 29 points of ceiling upside (a full positional advantage).
The Draft Approach
Don’t do this: “I’ll get elite RBs early, light on WRs.”
Do this: Balance across positions, but add depth to high-ceiling positions.
Example:
- Early: Mahomes (QB), Saquon (RB), Jefferson (WR) — three anchors
- Mid: Alvin Kamara (RB), A.J. Brown (WR), Travis Kelce (TE) — position depth
- Late: Jaylen Warren (RB), Gabe Davis (WR), Trey McBride (TE) — more depth
Result: 3 RBs, 3 WRs, 2 TEs, 1 QB = high ceiling across all positions.
The Payoff
Distribution strategies:
- Maximize ceiling (multiple boom players every week)
- Reduce variance (less reliant on one position booming)
- Optimize auto-fill (more high-ceiling options to choose from)
