Best Ball Injury Risk: How to Handle Fragile Players and Injury History in Your Draft

In standard fantasy football, an injury to your RB1 in Week 3 is a disaster. You have to scramble for a replacement, potentially lose that week’s matchup, and manage a depleted roster for weeks. In best ball, an injury to your RB1 in Week 3 is unfortunate but manageable — your next-best RB slots in automatically, and you drafted enough depth that the loss is absorbed.

This structural difference changes how you should think about injury risk in best ball.

How Best Ball Changes Injury Risk Calculus

Automatic lineup optimization. In best ball, the platform automatically selects your highest-scoring eligible players each week. You cannot forget to make a substitution or get caught with an injured player in your lineup. If your RB1 goes down, your next-best RB contributes automatically.

This means injury risk in best ball reduces to: will this player’s lost games cost you ceiling weeks? It does not mean: will I be scrambling for a replacement on the waiver wire?

Depth is the hedge. The best ball response to injury risk is drafting depth. If you draft an injury-prone RB in the 3rd round, you hedge by drafting another RB in the 5th who can absorb his weeks when healthy. The injured-player risk is priced into the 3rd-round ADP — you are paying below market for the healthy weeks because the market is discounting for injury risk.


Evaluating Injury History

Injury type matters. Not all injury history carries equal risk:

  • Soft tissue injuries (hamstrings, calves, soft tissue tears): These recur at higher rates than other injury types. A WR who has had 3 hamstring issues in 4 seasons is a higher injury risk than his ADP may reflect.
  • Traumatic injuries (broken bones, dislocations): These typically heal fully and do not predict future injury at higher rates.
  • ACL tears: ACL recovery typically takes 9–12 months. A player returning from a torn ACL in their first season back is worth evaluating carefully — some players return to full form immediately, others need 1–2 seasons to regain explosiveness.

Recent vs. historical. Two hamstring injuries in the last 18 months is more relevant than four hamstring injuries across a 6-year career. Recency matters — a player who has had a clean bill of health for 2 years and avoided soft tissue issues has reduced their injury risk profile.


Best Ball-Specific Injury Pricing

The ADP discount is real. Players with injury history are priced lower in ADP than they would be if they had the same talent and no injury history. This discount is the market’s attempt to compensate for injury risk. In best ball, where you can draft depth to hedge, this discount is often worth taking.

A WR1-caliber player available 2 rounds after similar players who are not injury risks is worth drafting if you have an alternative at the same position 2–3 rounds later. The injury-discounted WR gives you a high-ceiling option when healthy, and your depth covers the weeks when he is not.

Do not draft without a backup. The injury discount is worth taking only if you draft a backup at the same position within 3 rounds. An injury-prone WR1 drafted in Round 3 with no reliable WR backup until Round 9 is not a good best ball strategy — you are buying the injury risk without building the depth hedge.

Position context. Running back carries the highest structural injury risk of any fantasy position, due to contact volume. A running back who has been fully healthy for 2 years still carries higher structural injury risk than a quarterback or wide receiver with similar talent. This is not injury history — it is the nature of the position.


When to Avoid Injury-Prone Players

Clear recurrence pattern. A player with a recurrence pattern in the same injury type 3+ times in recent seasons — repeat hamstrings, repeat MCLs, multiple soft tissue issues per season — has demonstrated a fragility that is more structural than bad luck.

Still recovering from serious injury. A player entering the season still not fully recovered from an ACL, high ankle sprain, or other multi-month injury represents a different risk than a fully healthy player with injury history. Their ceiling for the upcoming season is genuinely lower, not just at risk of becoming lower.
