Game Stacking in Best Ball: How to Use Opponent Correlation to Win More Tournaments

If QB stacking is the foundation of best ball strategy, game stacking is the next level. When both teams in a game score heavily, players on both sides of the ball contribute to that scoring. A game stack captures production from the full game — not just your QB’s team.

How Game Stacking Works

Standard stack (one-team correlation): QB + WR1 from the same team. When the QB has a big day, his WR1 is likely also having a big day. The correlation between quarterback and primary receiver performance is strong.

Game stack (two-team correlation): QB + WR1 + a player from the opposing team (“bring-back”). When the game is a shootout, both teams are scoring. The bring-back captures production from the side of the field your main stack isn’t on.

Why it matters: High-scoring games create more fantasy points across the board. If both teams need to respond to each other’s scoring, your game stack captures from both responses. You’re betting on the game environment, not just one team.


Building the Bring-Back

Best bring-back targets:

  • Opposing QB’s primary receiver: The most direct correlation play. The opposing team’s WR1 benefits directly from the same high-scoring environment that helps your main stack.
  • Opposing WR2 (contrarian): In games where the opposing WR1 is heavily owned by other managers, the WR2 can provide similar production with better differentiation in large field tournaments.
  • Opposing pass-catching RB (PPR): Few managers bring back the opposing team’s receiving RB — this creates differentiation while still capturing game-level correlation.

Avoid as bring-back:

  • Rushing-focused RBs — run-heavy approaches are ball-control strategies, not shootout strategies
  • Low-target receivers (WR4, WR5) — they still get few targets even in high-scoring games

When to Game Stack vs. Standard Stack

Game stack is optimal when:

  • The game projects as a high-total game (49+ O/U)
  • Both teams have pass-heavy offenses
  • Both teams have identifiable primary receivers worth rostering

Standard stack is sufficient when:

  • The game total is average (44–48 O/U)
  • The opposing team has no clear high-value bring-back option
  • The bring-back player’s ADP is priced above standalone value (correlation premium already priced in)

Tournament-Specific Differentiation

In large-field tournaments (Best Ball Mania and similar), differentiation from the field is a real edge. When thousands of teams share the same stars, unique construction adds value.

Differentiation moves:

  • Stack from an unpopular high-total game instead of the marquee matchup (most managers flock to the obvious shootout)
  • Bring back the opposing team’s WR2 instead of the consensus WR1 when the WR1 is massively owned
  • Run a two-game structure with independent correlation plays — when the popular game doesn’t go high-scoring, your second stack fires instead

In head-to-head or small contests: Differentiation matters less. The clearest correlation plays are sufficient.


Executing the Game Stack in the Draft

Step 1: Research projected game totals before the draft — identify 1–2 games likely to be high-scoring based on O/U projections and offense vs. defense matchups.

Step 2: Draft your primary QB in Rounds 5–7; his main receiver in Rounds 7–9.

Step 3: Add the bring-back in the same range as your secondary receivers. Bring-back players from popular stack games often have ADP in Rounds 8–11.

Step 4: Verify composition after the draft: QB + 2 receivers from one team + 1 receiver from the opponent. Count remaining WR depth separately from the game stack.
