How to Handle Injuries in Best Ball: Strategy When You Can't Make Moves
In season-long leagues, an injured player is a problem you can react to — drop them, claim a replacement, adjust your roster. In best ball, an injured player is a permanent hole. You set your team at the draft and watch for 17 weeks.

How Best Ball Changes the Injury Calculus
In season-long fantasy: An injured WR1 costs you 1–2 weeks before you find a replacement on waivers. Damage limited.
In best ball: An injured WR1 costs you every ceiling week they were projected to have. A WR who was going to score 40 points in Week 9 — that 40-point week is gone. Your next-best WR plays instead — but if they score 18, that’s the cap. Over a full tournament run, these ceiling-week losses accumulate across multiple rounds.
The multiplier: A Round 2 WR is supposed to contribute to 4–5 of your best-counted weeks across the season. If they miss 8 games with an injury, you lose some or all of those ceiling contributions — which are the weeks that win tournament advancement rounds.
Pre-Draft: Pricing Injury History Correctly
Chronic soft-tissue injuries (hamstring, quad, ankle): These tend to recur. A WR who missed 4 games with a hamstring in Year 1 and 5 games with a hamstring in Year 2 is a real risk. The market often prices them at healthy expected value because they’re healthy at draft time. In best ball, apply a 15–25% discount relative to season-long ADP.
Acute injuries (ACL prior season, broken collarbone): These are single-event injuries without a chronic recurrence pattern. A player returning from an 18-month ACL recovery doesn’t necessarily have a worse injury profile — these are far less predictive of future injury than chronic soft-tissue problems. Don’t over-discount.
RB-specific risk: RBs are the most injury-prone position by contact frequency. Early-round bellcow RBs carry inherent injury risk that matters more in best ball than anywhere else because you cannot replace them. This is one of the core arguments for Zero-RB.
Draft Approach: Building an Injury-Resilient Roster
Breadth over concentration: Instead of 3 elite WRs + thin depth, build 4 high-ceiling WRs + 4 WR2 upside players. Your ceiling is slightly lower in a best-case scenario but much more resilient when any of the top 4 miss time. With 8–10 WRs, a single injury doesn’t collapse your best weeks.
Avoid the injury-prone player entirely? No. An injury-prone WR who stays healthy has the same value as any other WR. The goal is pricing risk correctly, not avoiding all injury risk. If a chronic-hamstring WR is going at their healthy ADP, they’re overpriced for best ball. If they’re going at a 30% discount to their healthy value, the risk is already priced in and they may be a buy.
RB depth: Draft 4–6 RBs knowing 1–2 will likely miss 3–5 games. Have enough depth that a single RB injury doesn’t collapse the position entirely.
TE timing: The late-round TE punt partially insulates against the TE injury problem. Paying Round 14 for a TE who gets hurt costs you little. Paying Round 3 for an elite TE who gets hurt costs you significant early-round capital with no return.
In-Season: What Actually Happens When Your Player Gets Hurt
You cannot claim a replacement, make a trade, or adjust your roster. The auto-lineup algorithm handles it:
- Your injured player scores 0 (did not play)
- The algorithm selects your next-best scorer at the position for that week
- You don’t start an injured player accidentally
The injury only hurts your ceiling. A 3-week injury is a 3-week ceiling drop, not a season loss. A season-ending injury is a permanent hole — but your remaining roster still fills the position with your next-best options automatically.
What to track in-season: Even without the ability to react, knowing injury timelines matters for projecting which tournament rounds you’re still competitive in. If your WR1 and WR2 are both on 4-week IR in the same stretch, your advancement path through that round is significantly narrowed.
