Why Passing Volume Teams Win Best Ball: How to Find High-Upside NFL Offenses
Best ball’s auto-set scoring rewards ceiling production above all else. Your WR3 who scores 8 points does not start. Your WR3 who scores 28 points does. This creates a structural advantage for players on high-volume passing teams — they have more opportunities to generate the ceiling games that auto-set captures.

Why passing volume matters: Every fantasy point a WR or TE scores comes from a pass attempt. More pass attempts means more opportunities for receiving yards and touchdowns. An offense that throws 38 times per game generates roughly 45% more receiving opportunity per game than an offense that throws 26 times.
A WR with 15% target share in a 38-attempt offense receives roughly 5.7 targets per game. The same 15% target share in a 26-attempt offense generates 3.9 targets. That difference compounds into a massive scoring gap over a season.
Volume vs. efficiency: High-volume teams generate more opportunities; efficient teams generate more touchdowns per drive. In best ball, volume matters more because it is more consistent week-to-week and auto-set rewards the big weeks more than it punishes the quiet weeks.
Identifying High-Volume Passing Teams
Primary indicators:
- Pass attempts per game: League average is roughly 30–33. Top-10 teams throw 36–42 times per game — roughly 25–30% more than league average.
- Pass rate on early downs: Teams that pass on first and second down (not just third-and-long) generate the most consistent volume. Third-down-dependent teams have more variance — they generate volume when drives stall but less when the run game works.
- Game script neutrality: Teams that pass regardless of score are more valuable than teams that pass only when trailing.

Target Distribution: Volume AND Share Matter
High team passing volume only matters if it is distributed to the players you own. A team that throws 40 times per game but has one dominant WR1 taking 35% of targets leaves little volume for WR2 and WR3 options.
Concentrated vs. distributed target share: Some offenses concentrate volume on one alpha receiver (35%+ of targets) — excellent for that alpha, capped upside for everyone else. Air-raid and spread offenses distribute targets more evenly across 3–4 receivers, creating multiple viable fantasy options within the same offense.
Why distributed volume helps best ball specifically: In best ball, you often own 2–3 players from the same high-volume team. If a distributed-volume offense produces 42 pass attempts and your WR1, WR2, and TE all receive 7–10 targets, all three have ceiling potential in the same week. The Low-Efficiency Trap
Some teams throw 40+ times because they are bad — they fall behind early, cannot run the ball, and pass out of desperation. Garbage-time volume is worth less in best ball because scores are typically out of reach (TDs less likely), coverage is prevent-oriented (more YAC, fewer TDs), and the QB may be a below-average passer.
Separating good volume from desperation volume: Look at pass attempts in competitive game situations (fourth quarter with the game within 8 points) vs. total pass attempts. Teams that pass heavily only when trailing generate less reliable WR production.
Roster Construction Around Passing Volume
The team targeting approach:
- Identify 3–5 offenses projected for top-10 passing volume
- Within each offense, find which players command the best target share at what ADP
- Build stacks around those offenses — QB + two WRs from the same team
