Best Ball Portfolio Plan: How to Organize Your Entries Before You Draft
A portfolio plan is the pre-draft blueprint for your whole set of best-ball entries. Before you draft a single team, you decide how many entries you’ll build, what role each one plays, how aggressive the set should be, and how much you’ll let any one player or stack appear across your teams.

The plan exists to solve one problem: without it, drafting many entries tends to produce many similar entries. You default to your favorite players and your comfortable build shape every time, and end up with a set of near-duplicate rosters and dangerous over-exposure. The plan is what makes the portfolio a deliberate set of different shots rather than the same shot repeated.

How to Build the Plan
Build the plan in the order the table lists, because each choice constrains the next:
- Decide the entry count first. Everything else scales to how many shots you’re taking — a 3-entry plan and a 50-entry plan have completely different diversification needs. You can’t plan roles or exposure without knowing the size.
- Assign a role to each entry (or group of entries). One tranche is your high-ceiling swing, one is your stable balanced core, one is your differentiation/contrarian group. In a large portfolio you assign roles to blocks of entries, not each one individually.
- Set your risk tolerance to the contest. A large, top-heavy tournament wants more aggressive, differentiated builds; a smaller or flatter contest wants more balance. The plan’s overall aggression should match the field you’re entering.
- Set exposure guardrails. Rough limits, not exact math — e.g. “no single player on more than ~40% of my teams.” A boundary is what stops your favorite players from quietly taking over the whole set.
Worked Example: Planning 20 Entries
You’re entering a large top-heavy tournament with 20 teams. Your plan: because the contest rewards extreme outcomes, you skew aggressive — roughly a third high-ceiling swing builds, a third balanced cores, a third deliberately differentiated/contrarian teams. Your exposure guardrail caps any one player around 40%, so no single injury can sink the portfolio.
With that plan written down before you draft, each of the 20 drafts has a job, and you can see when you’re drifting — if you’re 15 teams in and already at your cap on three players, the plan tells you to differentiate the rest. Without the plan, you’d have drafted 20 similar teams around your favorite players and called it a portfolio.
Common mistake: drafting many entries with no plan (which produces accidental overlap and over-exposure), or building a plan so rigid it traps you into bad picks. The plan should guide, not straitjacket: decide your entry count, assign each team a role, match your aggression to the contest size, and set rough exposure limits — then let the draft board flex you within those boundaries. And always fit the plan to the tournament; a small-field plan and a large-field plan should look different.
