In best ball you draft a fixed roster and never touch it again — no waivers, no trades, no lineup changes. That makes how you allocate your roster spots across positions one of the most consequential choices in the entire format. Get the split right and your team has a path to spike weeks all season; get it wrong and you’ve either wasted spots on positions you didn’t need or left a hole you can’t patch. Fortunately, years of best-ball data point to a clear, repeatable framework.

Why Best Ball Is WR-Heavy

The most important allocation principle: draft more wide receivers than anything else. Most standard builds land on 7–9 WRs, and there are good reasons:

  • Receivers produce the most spike weeks. Best ball rewards ceiling (your best scores auto-start), and the WR position is where big, lineup-winning weeks are most abundant.
  • WR is the deepest, most stable position. Receivers get hurt less than running backs and have more predictable, volume-based roles, so a deep receiver room gives you reliable weekly options.
  • You need to fill multiple WR/flex slots every week, and having a large, high-ceiling pool ensures your auto-started lineup is strong at those spots.

WR-heavy isn’t a gimmick; it’s the backbone of most winning best-ball rosters.

Running Backs: Stockpile for Upside

Running back typically gets 5–7 spots, and the approach is different from WR. Because RB is fragile and injury-driven, you’re stockpiling upside — drafting a mix of starters and, crucially, high-upside backups and committee members who are a snap away from a workload. In best ball, you can afford to roster many volatile RB swings because the busts get auto-benched and the hits auto-start. A few of those late-round dart throws hitting (which injuries make likely) can carry your roster. You want enough backs that you’re always fielding a competitive RB/flex group and holding several lottery tickets.

The “Onesie” Positions: QB and TE

Quarterback and tight end are the “onesie” positions in single-QB, single-TE best ball — you only start one of each per week, so you invest the minimum needed to cover the season:

  • QB: 2–3. You need enough to cover bye weeks and the occasional injury without ever having to punt the slot. Two is the floor; three is comfortable. Beyond that, you’re spending spots that would produce more upside at WR or RB. (The exception is if you draft a late-round QB committee strategy, which can push toward 3.)
  • TE: 2–3. Either draft one elite anchor and one cheap backup, or punt the position and take a few late-round dart throws hoping one spikes. Because you only start one, over-investing in TE spots is inefficient. Two or three is standard.

The onesie logic is simple: since you only start one, extra bodies at QB and TE mostly sit on the bench uselessly. Cover the position, then spend your remaining capital where more spots translate to more spike weeks — WR and RB.

How Roster Size Adjusts the Split

The exact numbers flex with your roster size (best-ball rosters commonly run 18–20 spots):

  • Smaller rosters (18): tighten to the minimums — 2 QB, 2 TE, and lean your extra spots toward WR.
  • Larger rosters (20+): you can afford a third QB or TE and a deeper RB stockpile, but WR should still get the largest share.
  • The ratios matter more than the exact counts: WR gets the most, RB the second most, and QB/TE split the remainder at the minimum needed to cover the season.

Worked Example: Two Allocations, One Roster Size

Two managers each draft a 20-spot best-ball roster. Manager A follows the framework: 8 WR, 6 RB, 3 QB, 3 TE. Manager B, nervous about the onesie positions, drafts 4 QBs and 4 TEs, leaving only 6 WR and 6 RB.

Across the season, Manager A’s deep receiver room produces spike weeks and his RB stockpile cashes a couple of injury-driven hits — his auto-started lineup is strong at the high-scoring positions. Manager B, meanwhile, has two extra quarterbacks and one extra tight end mostly rotting on his bench (he only starts one of each), while his thin 6-WR room can’t match the ceiling of Manager A’s eight. Same 20 spots, but Manager B wasted three of them on onesie depth he’ll never start, and his roster has a lower ceiling everywhere it counts.

Common mistake: over-allocating to the onesie positions — carrying four quarterbacks or four tight ends “to be safe.” Since you only start one QB and one TE each week, extra bodies there mostly sit benched and produce nothing, while the spots they cost you would generate real spike-week upside at WR or RB. Cover QB and TE with the minimum (2–3 each), then pour everything else into a deep, high-ceiling WR room and an upside-laden RB stockpile.

The Bottom Line

Best-ball roster allocation is a solved problem in broad strokes: go WR-heavy (7–9), stockpile RBs for upside (5–7), and carry only the minimum QBs and TEs you need to cover the season (2–3 each).
