Best Ball RB Allocation: How Many Running Backs to Draft and When to Take Them
The right number of running backs in best ball is not a fixed answer. It depends on draft position, the players available, and how your WR room is developing as the draft progresses.

Why RBs Are Tricky in Best Ball
The ceiling problem. WRs have more total boom weeks per season because they see the ball more frequently. An elite WR on a pass-heavy offense will score 20+ points more often than an elite RB because WRs catch 120–160 targets per year while RBs rarely see that volume unless they are also primary pass catchers.
The injury problem. RBs have higher injury rates than any skill position. A first-round RB pick that results in a season-ending injury in Week 3 is a catastrophic waste of draft capital that cannot be recovered in best ball — there is no waiver wire.
The committee problem. The NFL has trended toward using multiple running backs, limiting single-RB usage. A perceived RB1 who is actually in a 50/50 committee has much lower best ball value than his draft price suggests.
Draft Allocation by Approach
Zero RB. Do not take a RB until Round 7 or later. Build WR depth through Round 6, then take multiple mid-range RBs with upside in Rounds 7–12. Best case: your WR room dominates, one or two mid-range RBs break out in bellcow roles. Worst case: your late RBs all stay in committees and your RB production is consistently below average.
Hero RB. Take one premium RB in Rounds 1–2, then pivot to WR-heavy from Round 3 onward. Best case: your RB1 is durable and hits their ceiling all season while your WR room is deeper than average. Worst case: your premium RB is injured early and you have no RB depth.
Balanced allocation. Draft 2–3 RBs in Rounds 4–8, distributed across positions. Best case: multiple RBs have good years, WR room is solid. Worst case: your RBs are all backup-level players who never get an extended starting role.
Which RBs to Target
High-usage bellcows. An RB who commands 20+ carries plus pass-catching duties in a run-first offense is the only RB worth premium draft capital. These players exist every year — identifying the true bellcows at draft time is the skill.
Committee RBs with breakout potential. An RB entering a committee situation where the lead back is injury-prone or declining is a candidate for a mid-season workload takeover. These players have low ADP but significant upside if the situation changes.
Pass-catching RBs. RBs who are primary pass catchers from the backfield accumulate points through receptions and receiving yards — more consistent week-to-week scoring than pure rushing RBs. In PPR best ball, receiving RBs hold their floor better through bad rushing weeks.
How Many RBs Is Enough
Minimum viable RB room: In an 18-player best ball roster with a standard lineup (2 RB + 1 FLEX), you need at least 3 RBs to cover bye weeks. Fewer than 3 RBs creates a structural weakness.
Ideal range: Most best ball rosters carry 3–5 running backs — 2 expected starters; 1–2 backups for bye weeks; 1 upside pick (boom-bust committee back or handcuff with breakout potential). Going above 5 RBs typically means sacrificing WR depth without commensurate RB upside — the marginal 6th RB is almost always worse than the marginal 6th WR in best ball.
Adjusting During the Draft
If early rounds favor WRs: Stack WRs early and pivot to RBs in Rounds 5–8. Do not reach for an RB at Round 2 just because other managers are not taking them.
If a premium RB falls unexpectedly: Take them regardless of whether it fits your planned approach. Value on the board outweighs position balance in the early rounds.
Track your own lineup as you draft. By Round 10, know exactly how many RBs you have and what your floor is for bye weeks. If you are at Round 10 with only 1 RB, your next 2 picks should include at least one RB regardless of how attractive the WR board looks.
